Alien RPG: The Second Edition Is Coming

In 2019, Free League discovered that in space, no one can hear you scream. In 2024, you will discover that on Earth, everyone can hear you scream! When you’re playing the just-announced Second Edition, that is.

The official Alien Ripleying Game — I’m leaving that typo in there — has become one of Free League’s biggest hits since it was introduced five years ago. It’s grown in size with expansions and add-ons, but a full second edition seemed inevitable eventually. Soon you’ll be able to Build Better Worlds with new artwork, new content, and a variety of new tools, all of which will be compatible with previous releases of the game.

A Kickstarter is planned for the fall that will introduce a new starter set that will serve as the perfect entry point for anyone just getting into the Alien RPG, including abridged Second Edition rules, character sheets, custom dice, reference cards and handouts, plus an expanded edition of the Hope’s Last Day scenario. But there will be material for veterans of the game too: a new cinematic scenario, Rapture Protocol, will come in its own set. The scenario was written by Jonathan Hicks and Free League’s Tomas Härenstam, and features the crew of a small star freighter on a resupply run to a remote industrial colony, which soon becomes embroiled in a deadly conflict.

We’ll have more info about the Alien RPG Second Edition Kickstarter as we get closer to its launch date, which should be sometime this fall.

Sweet! I love Alien RPG, but I'm always down for more content. Hope's Last Day is a classic scenario, so an expanded version sounds awesome. That new cinematic scenario, Rapture Protocol, also has me intrigued. Resupply run gone wrong? Sign me up, Game Mother! Just gotta convince my group to chip in for the Kickstarter.

New edition, huh? I like the Alien RPG we have now, but I'm curious to see what they've changed. Hopefully, the new rules are clearer and streamline things a bit. Compatibility with old stuff is a big plus, though. I'd hate to have to rebuild my entire collection of Weyland-Yutani gear. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the Kickstarter details reveal.

New artwork? Intriguing! The Alien universe has such a rich visual style, and I'm curious to see how they're interpreting things for the second edition. Maybe they'll finally give us a good look at the Company's secret bioweapons labs. One can dream, right? Also, is that a typo, or is there actually an official "Alien Ripleying Game" out there somewhere? Because that sounds hilarious.

Oh, man, a new Alien RPG edition! This is like Christmas in July. I can already picture myself running terrifying, atmospheric campaigns with the new rules and content. I'm especially excited about the new cinematic scenario, Rapture Protocol. A small crew on a resupply run? That's a recipe for disaster. I hope they include some really creepy alien encounters and lots of opportunities for player-driven horror. Can't wait to dive into character creation and start building my new crew.

A new Alien RPG edition? Cool! I wonder if they'll finally embrace digital tools more fully. Maybe a character builder app or a virtual tabletop integration? That would be awesome. I'd also love to see more support for online play. I know a lot of people prefer in-person gaming, but online options can make it easier to get together with friends who live far away. I'm hoping the Kickstarter includes some digital add-ons.

Ooh, a new cinematic scenario! As a Game Mother, I'm always looking for fresh campaigns to run for my players. Something with a small crew on a remote colony sounds like it could be super tense and atmospheric. Hopefully, the scenario book has some good tips and handouts for running the game. Nothing beats seeing your players freak out when they realize they're not alone in the darkness.

A second edition this soon? It's a smart move by Free League. They're clearly banking on the Alien franchise's continued popularity. I'm curious to see how this will affect the resale value of my first edition stuff. If the new edition is a significant upgrade, I might consider selling my old books and buying the new ones. But if it's just a minor refresh, I might hold onto my collection.
