Panzer Returns With Friends In His Third NES Outing

Because you can’t keep a (relatively) good man down, Panzer, the hero of his self-titled line of indie NES games, is back once again. But this time, he’s somehow humble enough to share the spotlight with others: in Panzer 3, you’ve got the full team.

Panzer is still trying to impress the World Council, and decides to take his crew on ten different quests across that many levels, each with a formidable boss at the end. You can choose to tackle these levels as any three members of Panzer’s eight-member team and switch between them at will. Pick from the skilled Hunter Kankaro, the formidable Ice Mage Ahzriaz, the Crazed Troll Vespeto, and many others. Perhaps even Panzer himself if you’re desperate. They’ll grow more powerful as you play and unlock special abilities for each character.

Panzer 3 is a large upgrade from Panzer 2, containing a wider variety of gameplay in its stages and the ability to tackle them in any order you want thanks to a Mega Man-inspired menu screen. Trust me, a lot of work went into it — I was there. (Full disclosure, my own video game character Allison of Astra makes a cameo in this game in a hidden area; however neither I nor she are receiving a dime from this campaign.)

The cheapest way to get Panzer 3 is the digital version at $11 American ($15 Canadian). A complete box set costs $62 American, but today and today only you can pledge to the Early Bird tier and get the same product for $55. A Collector’s Edition with crazy extras like a custom NES controller and a miniature of the character “D. Muscles” costs $145.

Check out the Panzer 3 Kickstarter here. Play the demo by going here to download or here for an in-browser version. The campaign will run until August 31!

Dude, YES! I loved the first two Panzer games, but the limited party options were rough. Three-person teams with eight characters to choose from? Now that's what I'm talking about! This open-world, choose-your-own-adventure style is perfect for replayability. Plus, hidden areas with cameos?

Honestly, I wasn't the biggest fan of the first two games, but the whole "choose your crew" thing sounds awesome. Being able to switch characters on the fly and explore levels in any order? That's way more my style. Plus, an $11 digital download is pretty sweet for an indie game. This might be the Panzer game that finally wins me over.

Whoa! a new NES game in 2024? That's pretty rad! Back in my day, we didn't have fancy Kickstarter campaigns or anything. You just walked into the store and hoped the game was good. This whole "Panzer" series sounds interesting, though. Three-person teams, open world exploration... sounds a bit more complex than the classic NES games I grew up with, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Maybe I'll check out the demo and see if it scratches that nostalgia itch.

$11 for the digital download, huh? Now that's a price I can get behind. I love a good indie game, and who can resist a good ol' fashioned NES adventure? The whole "choose your crew" thing sounds like a fun twist on the classic beat-em-up formula. I might have to skip the fancy Collector's Edition, but that demo is definitely getting downloaded.

Eight playable characters, unlockable abilities, AND ten whole levels? Sign me up! I can already see myself spending hours grinding for the best gear and mastering each character's skillset. Being able to tackle levels in any order is a great touch for those who like to optimize their playthroughs. That hidden area with the cameo... that's definitely going to be the first thing I try to find.
