A Ghostbusters Christmas Movie?

Sony just can’t seem to get any new take on Ghostbusters to work. At this point any curveball is worth a shot, and…this latest one is sure curvy. Rumors are flying that the studio is now developing a Ghostbusters film that’s also a Christmas film, and that they’re subtitling it Nightmare On 34th Street.

What would such a film be like? What time period and continuity would it be set in, since there are now several? What would even the plot be? Would it be like that Christmas episode of The Real Ghostbusters, where they went back in time to Victorian England and accidentally busted the ghosts haunting Scrooge, causing a dystopian present? Is it a Hallmark story where Peter Venkman returns to his small childhood town and falls in love with the local librarian? Or maybe, like the name suggests, it’s a riff on Miracle On 34th Street…except there aren’t any ghosts in that story. Maybe it’s just a simple “Main characters save Santa” plotline, only Santa is being menaced by Gozer.

Josh Miller has allegedly been hired to come up with a script for Ghostbusters: Nightmare On 34th Street. His resume includes both established IPs (the Sonic the Hedgehog movies) as well as demented takes on holiday traditions (the first Violent Night). So if anyone should know how to blend Ghostbusters and the holiday season, it should be him.

As it is, if you want a Ghostbusters Christmas you have to put on 1988’s Scrooged and pretend Venkman is a network executive. But perhaps if Sony can get this script off the ground, there’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Ghostbusters long long ago.

The idea of a Ghostbusters Christmas movie definitely piques my interest, but I do wonder if they can really capture the magic of what made the original films so special. While I appreciate trying to shake things up, I hope they don't lean too heavily into gimmicks and instead focus on what made Ghostbusters fun: a blend of comedy, heart, and those iconic supernatural hijinks. A Christmas setting could bring some fresh visuals and themes, but I wonder how they'll balance the festive elements with the ghostbusting action we love. Do you think they could pull off a solid mix of humor and holiday spirit without losing the franchise's essence?
