Games Done Quick has pulled some interesting stunts in the last few years. People have rigged bots to play games and even input custom code that changes them. Speedruns have been done blindfolded, with feet, two players on one controller, etc. But perhaps nothing can top this: one of the games at the next AGDQ event will be played by a dog.
The pooch is a shiba inu named Peanut Butter, and his owner is gaming speedrunner JSR, who’s been coaching his furry friend to follow in his footsteps. “This took years of training,” JSR is quoted as saying. “I wanted to train him to do something special, when I realized as a puppy that he was much smarter than most other dogs I’ve seen. Since I’m a speedrunner and PB was literally named after getting a ‘P’ [personal best] in a speedrun it only made sense to me.”
Now JSR feels Peanut Butter is ready to step up. PB has become the first canine to place into the GDQ schedule and the game he and his master will be playing together is Gyromite. This bit of info makes the whole thing make a bit more sense, as the NES game was designed to be used with the robot peripheral ROB, whose tasks had to be simplified as he had no thumbs — and neither does Peanut Butter.
To help, JSR has built a custom peripheral for Peanut Butter to slam his paws down at the appropriate times. JSR will race through the stages while PB opens the doors for him. You can watch the pair perform this task in the promo video below. Awesome Games Done Quick returns this January.
