2K Games Officially Announces XCOM 2
2K Games have been teasing an AAA title for several weeks now and they have finally revealed exactly what that game is with the announcement of XCOM 2. The sequel to the 2012 turn-based strategy game is being developed by Firaxis Games, who are better known for the Civilization series but also worked on the last entry in the franchise.
Last week the publisher launched a website for the Advent Administration that advertised new urban cities that offered gene therapies and DNA splicing for people looking to get rid of illnesses. The website portrayed these new cities as the future of humanity but warnings from apparent hackers littered the site, suggesting that the Advent cities might not have been the perfect places to live. While it was clear that the website was a marketing campaign for a new game, many believed that it may have been for a possible new BioShock game.
Thanks to the information released by 2K Games though we now know that the Advent Administration is an organization run by a race of aliens who have taken control of Earth and are attempting to keep humans in line with these special cities. The XCOM forces are no longer the huge military organization they once were and instead much fight back as guerrilla fighters. The publisher only spoke about the game coming to PC, but considering the success of its predecessor on consoles and mobile it is likely it will make its way to other platforms.
The series began life as X-COM: UFO Defense in 1994 and has since seen a large number of other titles. In 2012, a reboot of the series was released in the form of UFO: Enemy Unknown which went on to receive wide critical acclaim and was later ported to mobile, Mac and Linux due to its popularity. This was followed by numerous pieces of DLC and a full expansion called XCOM: Enemy Within in 2013.
