Memorable Quotes That Captured the Essence of the Series:
SUMMARY: Two young girls meet when one transfers from another school. The transfer student was smart and popular. The other girl always felt like she lived in her shadow, not realizing that the transfer student was silently and secretly envious of her. Their paths in life crossed at different times. But their final meeting was a shock.
In “You and Everything Else”, Ryu Eun-Jung and Cheon Sang-Yeon attended the same school for a short period of time when they were young. Their financial background is what initially made Ryu Eun-Jung feel inferior. Ryu Eun-Jung and her mother lived in a basement apartment. She was so embarrassed by this that she never invited any of her friends over. There were plenty of kids who liked her a lot. However, she did invite Cheon Sang-Yeon to her home.
By comparison, Cheon Sang-Yeon was popular, smart, and pretty. They elected her as class president. That meant when the teacher had to leave the room, she was in charge. One day, a student next to Ryu Eun-Jung caused a problem. But Cheon Sang-Yeon punished both of them. From that day forward, Ryu Eun-Jung had a grudge against her, and every chance she got, she tried to get revenge. Later on, Ryu Eun-Jung found out that her favorite teacher was Cheon Sang-Yeon’s mom. Both of their mothers did their best to try to persuade their daughters to get along. Ryu Eun-Jung was invited over to Cheon Sang-Yeon’s home regularly. But Cheon Sang-Yeon transferred to another school. That separated them for a while.
All that time, Cheon Sang-Yeon was jealous and envious of Ryu Eun-Jung. WHY? Cheon Sang-Yeon thought her mother would have preferred for Ryu Eun-Jung to be her daughter. Ryu Eun-Jung’s boyfriend is the man she wanted to date. She didn’t end up at the same college and in the same club because she was following Ryu Eun-Jung. She was stalking was guy she had met online, who turned out to be Ryu Eun-Jung’s boyfriend. Cheon Sang-Yeon hated that Ryu Eun-Jung was living a happy life, while she was miserable.
Their paths crossed again in college. By that time, Ryu Eun-Jung was happy and had a steady boyfriend. When Cheon Sang-Yeon reappeared at the same college and joined the same club, she felt herself becoming small again. Even so, she believed that Cheon Sang-Yeon was a friend, so they moved into an apartment together.
Time passed, and they separated again, living their own adult lives. Cheon Sang-Yeon became famous. They had not spoken to each other for 10 years, and out of the blue, Cheon Sang-Yeon contacted Ryu Eun-Jung to meet up. She wanted to ask her “friend” for a final favor. The favor she asked made Ryu Eun-Jung very angry. The nerve! They haven’t spoken for 10 years, and she dared to make such a “barbaric” request. How could she? Were they ever friends?
My personal rating is the same as Dramabeans.
“You and Everything Else” is a slow-burn. The character Ryu Eun-Jung annoyed me because she seems to be so clueless about the genuine feelings of her so-called friend (frenemy?). When you’re a kid, you might not be aware of the ruthlessness of jealousy and envy. But when you get older, shouldn’t you have gained some wisdom and awareness, and at least, an antenna should go up, warning you to shield yourself?
On the other hand, when you realize Cheon Sang-Yeon’s home environment, you can sympathize with her. But that’s no reason for her to be a frenemy. I don’t believe in frenemies. You’re either a genuine friend or you’re a hater. You can’t be both! The storyline was very complicated, and I liked the way the plot unraveled. That means I THINK it’s worth watching. My high rating is because the two female leads gave stellar performances. There was no shortage of reviews for this K-drama. Viewers had a lot to say about it.
