pirate borg

Yarr! It be PIRATE BORG!

What’s a PIRATE BORG — a cultist from space with cybernetic implants who has a peg leg and a parrot? Yes, but it’s also the name of a tabletop RPG spinoff.

You’re familiar by now with MORK BORG, the gritty artpunk RPG introduced by Free League in 2020. Several expansions have been created officially since then, but the first third-party expansion, created by someone else with Free League‘s blessing, is about to hit. PIRATE BORG takes the world of MORK BORG and enhances it for the high seas.

This game is about being a greedy, filthy, scoundrel. Find a ship. Recruit some crew. Raid, pillage, plunder, and otherwise pilfer your weasley black guts out. Get a bigger ship. Kill some things. Upgrade your ship. Sneak into a fort. Raid a port. Acquire treasure. Bury said treasure. Become infamous. Search for someone else’s treasure. Flee in terror from unfathomable creatures from the deep. Drink all of the rum. Die on the high seas. Roll a new character and do it all again.

Everything you need for PIRATE BORG is included in a 166 page book:

  • complete rules based on and compatible with the award winning doom art-punk RPG Mörk Borg
  • 8 character classes
  • easy-to-learn naval combat rules
  • stats for 18 vessels
  • 80+ NPCs & monsters
  • 90+ system agnostic tables
  • “The Curse of Skeleton Point”, a sandbox style adventure with 11 pirate-themed locations.

PIRATE BORG was written and illustrated by Luke Stratton, also known as Limithron, who is known for his pirate-themed battle maps. Free League is distributing the game under their Free League Workshop sub-label, which was established for independent games that build on their own.

Now get this — PIRATE BORG is advertised as an addition to MORK BORG, but it doesn’t have to be. The tools within are malleable enough that they could be used in conjunction with any RPG out there. You wanna make it 5E compatible? Why not?

This kind of game appeals to the spirit of exploration that lives inside each of us. It's difficult to resist the allure of finding riches, facing terrifying monsters, and visiting places with a pirate theme. It's even cooler that it works with other RPG systems. As a lover of MORK BORG, I'm happy to learn about the PIRATE BORG expansion. It was a brilliant concept to introduce pirate adventures into the grim and dismal realm of MORK BORG. Its compatibility with other RPG systems increases its usefulness even further. I'm eager to get my hands on it and set sail across the piratical waters.

I'm keen on exploring the 18 different vessels and engaging in naval combat. The rich lore and artwork by Luke Stratton. I'm fascinated by the seamless integration with MÖRK BORG, as well as the potential for adaptation to other RPG systems. The 90+ system agnostic tables add a layer of versatility that sparks my imagination. As a lover of pirate lore, I can't wait to immerse myself in the treacherous world of PIRATE BORG, where danger and fortune await at every turn
