Wynonna Earp: Vengeance — The SDCC Trailer

After four of the wildest, weirdest seasons TV had ever seen, SyFy abruptly cut Wynonna Earp off in favor of a few new shows that quickly failed. Creator and showrunner Emily Andras had enough advance notice that she was able to cram all her leftover ideas into that last season, but it was quite a cram. SyFy hasn’t been the same since. They say their most watched show is Resident Alien, but do you know anyone who watches Resident Alien?

But unexpectedly, Wynonna lives on! Tubi came to Purgatory’s rescue with the announcement of a Wynonna Earp movie, three years after production shut down on the series. All the major players and actors are back for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, coming to the service this fall.

If you’ve never seen Wynonna Earp before, you probably shouldn’t start cold with this movie — one does not simply walk into Mordor OR Purgatory NM without some knowledge of the craziness within. You still have time to watch a few seasons first, but here’s my best encapsulation: The title character is the descendant of cowboy sheriff Wyatt Earp, who it turns out had a Castlevania-like destiny that locked him and his descendants into an eternal battle with the underworld. Wynonna is the latest to inherit that duty along with a magic demon-killing pistol named Peacemaker to do the job with. She starts up a romance with Doc Holliday, the same one the original Earp knew, because he became immortal.

Wynonna Earp is also known for AGGRESSIVELY courting the Tumblr shipper demographic with Waverly Earp and Nicole Haught, a couple whose obsession for one another is incredibly, shamelessly over the top (but so is everything else, so they fit in). Throw in witches, vampires, genies, a twist where Waverly turns out to be half-angel, a real-life twist where Melanie Scrofano became pregnant and Andras wrote her out of one episode by erasing her existence, and whatever else they could think of and throw in, and you get a good gumbo. I was there Day 1 because I eat nutty stuff like this up.

The show ended with its characters heading their separate ways, but a new threat is about to bring Wynonna and Doc back home. She’s described as the most powerful demon to ever terrorize the homestead, and The Heir can’t let that stand. This ultimately means at least 90 more solid minutes of gunshooting, supernatural horror and snarky one-liners. Maybe if you all watch, we’ll get more than that!

Tubi still hasn’t announced a definitive date for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, but it’s coming sometime in the fall.
