What Time Is It? It’s Games Done Quick Time
It always sneaks up on you: Games Done Quick is about to host another weeklong marathon starting tomorrow. Though GDQ hosts smaller events throughout the year, there are two big ones: Awesome Games Done Quick in January, and Summer Games Done Quick in June/July depending on the calendar. They are charity events — one raises money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation and the other raises money for Doctors Without Borders.
The goal of each video game playthrough in GDQ is to get through the game as fast as possible, using whatever cheats and glitches one can exploit. Some of the best speedrunners in the world compete in these marathons and it’s always entertaining to watch. Until 2020 the event was held from a hotel ballroom, but it shouldn’t surprise you to hear AGDQ 2022 will be hosted mostly from speedrunners’ homes. At this point we don’t know if the event will ever go back to ballrooms.
As for the games that will be torn apart this time, in the first day alone you can expect Deathloop, Metroid Prime Hunters, DKC2, Death’s Door, Zelda: Oracle Of Seasons and Mega Man 2. Through the week you’ll see Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, Gunstar Heroes, Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Psychonauts 2, Ori and the Blind Forest, Super Mario Galaxy, The Typing Of The Dead, Splatoon 2, Hades and much much more. Another Final Fantasy game will be part of it, the hallway runner FF13 — but it will be a shorter playthrough than the others. The infamous Awful Games Done Quick block will return with the CD-I Zelda’s Adventure leading things off.
It was two months ago that the Switch finally got a Twitch-viewing app. It’s the perfect way to watch AGDQ on your big TV, the way it was meant to be. Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 runs from January 9 through January 16, ending with Metal Gear Solid.
