Westworld Has Been Shut Down
Westworld, the future attraction wherein rich people go to play pretend cowboy, is shuttering its doors for good. Declining business may have been a factor, but the robot uprising probably also had something to do with it.
In the real world, HBO has decided to end the series after four seasons. The most recent aired on the channel and HBO Max last summer. The show’s creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, had planned for a five-season arc that is now being cut short.
“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” said HBO. “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”
Westworld was based on the 1973 movie written by successful author and technophobe Michael Crichton. It created instant buzz when it premiered in 2016, as an HBO original before the Streaming Wars had ever begun. I saw the first season, but dragged my feet on the second until I was told “the second season sucks, don’t bother.” So I didn’t, until I was told the fourth season was a return to form. Would the final season have redeemed the entire run? We’ll never know.
Westworld starred Evan Rachel Wood as the robot Christina, one of several who gained sentience and plotted a revolt against their human overlords. The series also featured Tessa Thompson, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Luke Hemsworth, James Marsden, Aaron Paul and Angela Sarafyan.
