Voltron Returns in New Dynamite Entertainment Comic Book Series
Dynamite Entertainment has officially announced the return of the Voltron Force and Voltron, Defender of the Universe in a new comic book miniseries, Voltron: From the Ashes. The new six-issue miniseries is written by Cullen Bunn (Deadpool, Captain America) with artwork by Blacky Shepherd (3 days in Darkness). The new series is set two hundred years after the events of the previous Voltron series from Dynamite. From the Ashes will focus on a new team to pilot the five robot lions that form Voltron, Defender of the Universe.
The the first series will debut in September 2015. The book will feature cover artwork by artist Alex Milne (Transformers). Recent attempts to reboot Voltron were not all that successful. The theatrical movie project never got off the ground either. So right now, a comic book series is the best outlet to tell new stories for the Voltron universe.
Speaking on the new book, writer Bunn stated: “You don’t grow up in the day and age of my childhood without developing a deep and abiding love for Voltron, so writing the adventures of such an iconic giant robot is a real thrill and a treat. With this story, I hope to show a couple of different sides of Voltron, one vibrant and exciting like the old cartoons, and one a little more dark and even frightening. This dichotomy should be a lot of fun for readers and allow me to explore different sides of the characters involved. For me, Voltron has this mythic quality that I really want to delve into, and I’m excited to see what fans think of my contribution to the Voltron legend!”
Voltron: From the Ashes will also be available as a digital release through Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital later this fall. You can check out the cover artwork from the first issue, along with some sample pages in black and white provided to us by Dynamite below:
