One of the finest entries in the highly competitive 1980s afterschool syndication market was Thundercats, Rankin-Bass’ epic anime-like story of a tribe of cat people marooned on the planet of Third Earth after their homeworld was destroyed by the Mutants of Plun-Darr. The leader of the Mutants, Mumm-Ra, pursued them still, but the Thundercats’ leader, Lion-O, was no slouch with a sword.
Marvel began printing a Thundercats comic book almost immediately after the cartoon hit the airwaves. Released under their new Star imprint, the book would be scripted by David Micheline and Gerry Conway and would last until 1988, printing 24 bi-monthly issues in all (switching to a monthly schedule in 1987). Currently the Thundercats comic license is held by Dynamite Entertainment, and they plan to use it not just to tell new stories, but to revive the old.
Dynamite has announced the Thundercats Classic Years Omnibus: hundreds of pages of classic Third Earth lore, pulled directly from the past and reprinted for the first time in forty years.”Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats! Hooooooo! At long last!” teases Dynamite. “The Thundercats return with beautifully remastered tales that have been out of print for four decades! Originally published by Marvel Comics, Dynamite has uncovered the original stories and remastered them into amazing omnibus editions! Don’t miss out on this limited release!”
By “limited” they mean this will be a release funded through Backerkit. Not all the details about it have been released yet, but when the campaign launches on November 13, we should learn more. Until then keep an eye (of Thundera) on the preview page.
