If you felt the finale of Stranger Things was missing some key information about the backstory of Henry Creel, that’s because it was. The stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which opened in London in 2023 and expanded to Broadway the following year, was all about the psycho’s teenage years in the late 1950s. The Dufferpuff Boys said you wouldn’t need to see the play to understand the finale, but this wasn’t entirely true — there were direct references to it that only made total sense if you already had that missing piece of the puzzle.
The First Shadow reveals what Henry was like prior to visiting the cave, and fleshes out that weird scene with the radioactive rock in more detail. It explains who the guy was that had it and where he got it from, as well as Dr. Martin Brenner’s connection to the whole thing. The play establishes that Henry knew Joyce and Hopper during this time, but the show never gives any indication they have a past, even in Season 5 when this was already canon.
We assumed Netflix would film The First Shadow shortly after its release to use it as a bridge to cover the long wait between Seasons 4 and 5, but they did not do so. We wondered if they ever would. Multiple news outlets are reporting that for some reason, THIS week is the time they picked to do this. You can make your own guesses as to why they’d wait so long, but we hear there have been some revisions made to key scenes, adding things the play could not show because they’d be spoilers for Season 5. This could be the reason for the wait.
That, or they wanted the play to make more money (yet Hamilton hasn’t had a problem selling tickets even after a filmed version hit Disney+). No word on when The First Shadow will be viewable in our living rooms, but we can at least confirm it’s on the way.
