Telltale’s The Walking Dead series has had a long and bumpy road to completion, but you’ll at last be able to slip the entire saga onto your shelf as one solid package. Or at least slip the digital copy into your hard drive folder, depending on your preference. Digital preorders for the game have opened today, for all platforms.
The series’ future was once in question when its parent company collapsed, suspending development of all its signature point-and-click adventure stories. Some of them were removed from digital marketplaces, and it looked like The Walking Dead would share that fate until Skybound Games, part of Robert Kirkman’s own production company, stepped in. They gathered much of the original team from Telltale and completed the final season.
Now The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is completely finished and will be sold as one product. A physical retail release, as well as a digital one (choose which you prefer), will contain everything: all four seasons of the series, the spinoffs Michonne and 400 Days, 10 hours of developer commentary, behind-the-scenes bonus features including concept and character art galleries, a “Return of The Walking Dead” documentary short, faithful recreations of classic menus, and a music player with over 140 musical tracks.
Plus there’s something sort-of new: the option to render the entire series in “graphic black,” a filter that was previously only available with The Final Season. “Graphic black is a loving tribute to the source material and a powerful art style that makes the game look like a living comic book,” says Kent Mudle, creative director. “An idea the team formulated and perfected with The Final Season, this new visual styling offers longtime fans a way to play the series again in a brand-new light while giving new audiences a smooth visual ride across all seasons.”
