SUMMARY: She was supporting her husband’s political campaign. Their daughter was a rebellious teenager, but she promised her mother she would behave herself for the wake of the campaign. But their daughter went missing. Her husband continued the campaign, saying that the daughter would probably come back home. However, there was no way the mother could focus on politics when she didn’t know if her daughter was dead or alive.

♦ Mom! I’ll Be Good!

In “The Truth Beneath”, Kim Yeon-hong is the mother of a rebellious, not atypical, teenage daughter, Kim Min-Jin, and the wife of a rising politician, Kim Jong-chan. He is also the biological father of Kim Min-Jin, i.e. not a wicked, uncaring stepfather and not an adoptive father. One big happy family, they are not! But you can’t really tell by their outer appearance.

Choi Mi-Ok is their daughter’s friend. Kim Jong-chan is busy preparing to kick off his political campaign, and Kim Yeon-hong is right there with him, providing whatever support she can. Her daughter is also there, but told her mom that she would be going over to spend time with a friend. Her mother gave her that ‘Can I really trust you to behave this time?’ look. The daughter assured her mother that everything would be fine. She’s behaving much better these days and understands the importance of her dad’s election. Kim Jong-chan smiled, gave her approval, and then told her daughter to make sure she left the phone number of her friend pinned to the board in her room. Kim Min-Jin did leave “a” phone number and then left home.

♦ Our Daughter Is Missing. Why Doesn’t It Matter?

After all the election-related campaigning activities were over, Kim Yeon-hong came home. Kim Min-Jin was not at home. It was late at night, and she was immediately alarmed. The phone number her daughter had pinned to the board was not a good contact number. She panicked and wanted to call the police and report her daughter missing. But the husband objected. He said Kim Min-Jin is probably just hanging out with friends and will show up at home soon. The husband did not want a report about a missing daughter disrupting his political campaign. Also, he thought his wife was overreacting since they both knew their daughter’s past “bad” behavior.

Kim Yeon-hong paid no attention to her husband and went straight to the police. She also began investigating on her own, starting at her daughter’s school, and questioning her daughter’s friend, Choi Mi-Ok. What she found was “the truth beneath”. The truth about her daughter’s private life, about her husband’s secrets, and about politics and the lengths people will go to achieve their political goals.

Even though “The Truth Beneath” was released in 2016, it was just added to the Viki USA database in 2025. The K-drama “Tempest” featured a strong female lead who supported her husband’s political campaign. So I decided to watch this film for contrast and comparison. Both female actresses are to be commended. I enjoyed the series and the movie.

I was impressed by the mother’s courage in the film. While her husband focuses on the political campaign, she refuses to ignore the reality of her daughter’s disappearance. Her determination drives the story, and I felt connected to her perspective. The pacing was steady, not too fast or too slow, which helped build suspense naturally. I appreciated that the daughter was portrayed as a real teenager, flawed and independent, instead of being overly dramatic. The movie also raises interesting points about power and ethics in politics, and how personal lives can be sacrificed for ambition. Honestly, I found Kim Jong-chan’s attitude frustrating. I understand he is ambitious and wants to win the election, but ignoring a missing child is unthinkable. The film shows how ambition can distort priorities, and it made me reflect on how society sometimes values public image over real human concerns. Yet, I admired Kim Yeon-hong for not giving in and following her instincts. She felt very real as a character. I also liked the small details, like the pinned phone number, which created believable tension. The movie may not have a perfect score on IMDb, but its emotional depth and moral questions make it compelling.
