The Trauma Code ~ Heroes on Call – A Helicopter for Trauma?

-

“The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call” is a 2025 Korean drama series, with 8 episodes, and categorized as Action and Medical Comedy Drama; based on the web novel “Trauma Center: Golden Hour”.

SUMMARY: The previous head of the Trauma Unit was so overworked he suffered burnout. The hospital needed a replacement and before they knew it, the Minister of Health and Human Services had already given someone the job.

From International Peace and From Black Wings?

In “The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call”, the Hankuk National University Hospital has a Trauma Unit that is staffed by doctors from the other units who rotate, on call, for emergencies. The rest of the medical staff, i.e. nurses and other assistants – are overworked. The head of the Trauma Unit finally burned out. He was very dedicated but the workload became too much.

The hospital director knew that they needed a replacement immediately. However, in a meeting with the Minister of Health and Human Services, he rambled on about how difficult it would be to find a qualified doctor, etc., etc. Instead of letting him continue making up excuses, the Minister of Health and Human Services announced that she had already found a replacement and he would be reporting for duty immediately.

The new head of the Trauma Unit is Dr. Baek Kang-hyuk, a trauma surgeon with experience, qualifications, and skills nobody can deny. To say that he’s seen and operated on just about every trauma case you can imagine would not be an exaggeration. He has been around the world in various hot spots like Afghanistan. His resume shows that he worked on the team of Doctors for International Peace (but doesn’t mention a mysterious group known as the Black Wings).

The very first day in the hospital’s Trauma Unit he performed surgery. He saved the patient’s life, but in the process he noted how badly the Unit was being run. A meeting had been called to introduce him to the rest of the doctors and they waited for a couple of hours until he finally showed up. The hospital director said he should start by apologizing for making everyone WAIT!!

Dr. Baek Kang-hyuk has a brash personality and started by saying that the hospital owed him an apology. He was supposed to come to Hankuk National University Hospital to work as head of the Trauma Unit. But he has decided that the Trauma Unit should be SHUT DOWN!! An overworked medical staff with rotating doctors who are not even skilled enough to handle trauma injuries, one operating room, inadequate equipment, and no funding? A fully equipped Trauma Center should be built and staffed with qualified doctors, nurses, and medical assistants. Oh! There should be helicopters and ambulance services too!

WHAT?? Is he insane? His first day on the job, late for a meeting, discourteous to the attendees, making impossible demands, and daring to make a decision that the hospital director should make. Who does Dr. Baek Kang-hyuk think he is? The Minister of Health and Human Services also attended the meeting and she was thrilled that he was willing to take on the challenge.

It was definitely going to be challenging. Most of the doctors and hospital administrators, starting with the director, were not going to cooperate and make his job easy. They argued that Dr. Baek Kang-hyuk was very reasonable and spent funds recklessly. How dare he use a helicopter to go directly to the accident site and save a person’s life? Doesn’t he know how much that cost? I guess it’s cheaper to let a person DIE!

My personal rating is the same as IMDb.

“The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call” is the second Korean drama series released in 2025 on Netflix USA. The first Netflix series to be reviewed by PopGeeks wasWhen the Stars Gossip”, a Rom-Com.  This series is a Medical Comedy.  I prefer more serious medical dramas. But that’s just me!
