SUMMARY:  You may be my big brother who raised me like a father, and you might be a competent detective who can solve violent crimes. But you can’t control who I fall in love with.

♦ That Guy Makes My Heart Race. But Why?

In “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”, Yoo Jin-Kook has never been married, yet he raised his younger sister, Yoo Jin-Kang. He is an awesome combination of big brother/dad, although he’s more like an overprotective dad than a concerned big brother. He works as a detective on the police force but he’s thinking about quitting his job. At least, that’s what he was thinking until … a young female university student was murdered. It was supposed to be a suicide – an easy open-and-shut case. But he started picking up on clues and bits and pieces of evidence that made him think it was a brutal murder. He started working along with the detective on the case, even though his boss told him to sit quietly at his desk until he quits his job. Don’t cause trouble!

Before getting involved with the case, he attended an event with his younger sister. He saw a young man, Kim Moo-Young, in a delivery truck and even though he had never seen him before, for some reason the guy made his heart race. His young sister also had a close encounter with Kim Moo-Young that same day and her first impression was that he was rude. Later on she saw him with her dear friend and it a obvious they were a dating couple. When she got a private moment with him, she asked him if he had pure intentions toward her friend. It was obvious that her friend liked him a lot. But did he feel the same way? He said NO. He wanted to know if she was attracted to him and that’s why it bothered her to see them together. She said NO. But that probably wasn’t true. If they kept bumping into each other, she might find him irresistible. But what about her friend? She asked him to never speak to her again. Oh yeah. That ought to work. Uuhh … it might work if he complied with her request. But why should he? There’s something about her that drew him to her and not her friend.

The relationships are going to get complicated because as Yoo Jin-Kook continues to assist with the investigation of the murdered female university student, he is picking up on leads that are pointing him in the direction of Kim Moo-Young. The relationship between his younger sister, Yoo Jin-Kang and Kim Moo-Young, I gradually beginning to develop and they are becoming closer. Of course, Yoo Jin-Kook has no proof or evidence that Kim Moo-Young is connected to the murder in any way. But the young guy is mysterious and makes his heart race. He could be a murderer. That is reason enough for him to be overly protective of his sister’s involvement with him. Better safe than sorry. But big brother doesn’t seem to realize that his younger sister is a full grown woman who is capable of making her own personal decisions, such as, who she falls in love with.

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.

“The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” made me anxious. Anxious because I was afraid the good guy would turn out to be a bad guy and it would upset me. I had to patiently watch each episode as the character peeled off his layers to show his true personality. It started off with a young college student getting murdered and the main character was floating around a lot of young women about the same age. I hated the thought of thinking he was picking victims because … I liked the guy! Clearly, the women were attracted to him. So I’m taking deep breaths for each episode with fingers crossed thinking: ‘Please! Don’t let this guy be a jerk!! Or worse. A killer!” It is so hateful and low to be manipulative and play with the genuine affections of people. Good thing it was just fiction!
