Two Horror K-dramas That Are Not Horror-Filled At All!

If the Korean drama features ghosts or vampires, some might categorize it as Horror, but they might not be horror-filled, i.e. they just don’t scare you. But they still might be fun to watch. “The Master’s Sun” and “Immortal Vampire” are two Korean dramas that meet this criterion.  One is a series and the other is a movie.

♦ (1) The Master’s Sun (2013); 17 episodes

Genre: Horror, Fantasy or Supernatural, Mystery, Romance, Comedy, Rich Boy/Poor Girl

STORYLINE: It’s “The Master’s Sun”, not “son”. Also, there is “Big Sun” and “Little Sun”. When they were growing up and attending school, Tae Kong-Sil and Tae Yi-Ryung were top students but Kong-Sil was the better student. For this reason, kids called them “Big Sun” and “Little Sun”. Yi-Ryung couldn’t stand always having to be in Kong-Sil’s shadow. One day Kong-Sil was in a tragic accident and was in a coma for 3 years. When she awakened she was not the same. How could people possibly believe that Kong-Sil could now see ghosts? This ability was very frightening. To most people, she looked and acted like she was a basket case.

While trying to get away from a ghost, Kong-Sil jumped into the car of Joo Joong-Won, the president of a shopping mall named Kingdom. It was an accidental encounter, but she accidentally discovered that by touching Joo Joong-Won, the ghosts would disappear. She believed that if he would just let her touch him she could finally get some sleep. The ghosts kept her awake, it was hard for her to keep a job, etc.

Naturally, Joo Joong-Won didn’t believe her. He figured she was just trying to close to him because he was wealthy. But her approach was certainly unusual. It took some time but she finally convinced him that she really could see ghosts. When she said she saw the ghost of a woman named Cha Hee-Joo. Joong-Won was shocked. Cha Hee-Joo was his first love but their relationship ended in tragedy. Since her death, he has been haunted by her memory. It seems Cha Hee-Joo was part of a plot to kidnap him for ransom. When he tried to get her to tell him who else was involved, Cha Hee-Joo said it was someone she needed to protect. Once she died, Joong-Won was tormented because he wanted to know who it was she protected even in her death. If Kong-Sil could talk to her ghost, he would ask her who the real culprit was that masterminded the kidnapping.

As time passed Joong-Won and Kong-Sil experienced many ghost encounters together and developed a romantic relationship. Tae Yi-Ryung is the model for the Kingdom shopping mall and Kang-Woo works as a security guard at the shopping mall. Tae Yi-Ryung is still jealous of Kong-Sil. Even without trying, Kong-Sil has garnered the attention and affection of both Joong-Won and Kang Woo. WHY? After all, Yi-Ryung is a celebrity, so shouldn’t she be the one that men desire? Even though she has no significant career accomplishments, Kong-Sil is still the “Big Sun” and Yi-Ryung is the “Little Sun”. She’s not just the “Big Sun”, she’s the “Master’s Sun”.

♦ (2) Immortal Vampire (2022)

Genre: Horror, Fantasy or Supernatural, Science Fiction, Romance

STORYLINE: Vampires live forever because they drink the blood of humans. But the blood of mankind has become contaminated and there are many blood-borne diseases. When vampires drink this contaminated blood they get VIDS (Vampire Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Not only do they not live forever, but they get old. VIDS is killing vampires. Even though this is not upsetting to humans, the vampire world must wonder if there is a cure. They can’t be immortal if they don’t drink blood. But if they don’t know whether the blood of the human is diseased … it’s like playing a game of Russian roulette with your immortality.

Yu Ri works late nights and looks like an average pretty young lady. Nobody would ever know she’s a vampire who is centuries old. Kang Min Jun is a customer who came into the restaurant where she worked. He got into trouble with some gangsters who were going to injure him badly for not paying back some money. Yu Ri rescued him but her life-saving efforts were witnessed by someone who had been searching for her, a man who worked for Soo Jung. They have been trying to find Yu Ri because Yu Ri possesses the VIDS antibody. Soo Jung is a vampire who lives as a celebrity, but her eternal youthful beauty is fading. That’s why she has to find Yu Ri. So she can get access to the VIDS antibody. She plans to kill Yu Ri and drink her blood.

Meanwhile, Yu Ri brings Kang Min Jun home to apply first aid to his wounds. She made it clear to her roommate that he is NOT FOR DINNER! Kang Min Jun did not realize it but he had been spared from having his blood drained. When he woke up the next day, Yu Ri was still asleep. He wrote a thank you note and left her apartment quietly.

No doubt he thought he would never see her again. But that was the beginning of their relationship. Kang Min Jun is a failed filmmaker who keeps hoping for that one movie that will shoot him to fame and fortune. He notices that Yu Ri looks great on camera. Maybe they could work together if she agrees to make a short movie with him. Soo Jung showed up at his studio pretending to want to work with Kang Min Jun in his film. But what she wanted was to get close to Yu Ri. For some reason, Kang Min Jun is suspicious. He just can’t believe a top star wants to be in his movie. Yu Ri, on the other hand, is clueless.

Main Characters:

  • Yu Ri (played by Wang Ji Won)
  • Kang Min Jun (played by Jae Hee)
  • Soo Jung (played by Lee Joo Yeon)

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.

If you are like me and don’t care too much for the Horror genre, but if it’s Halloween and you want to get into the spirit but don’t want to watch something scary, watch “Immortal Vampire”.

Even though the ratings were low I thought the plot was interesting. There are lots of contagious blood-related diseases, what would happen if a vampire drank infected blood? Hhmmm?? Never thought of that. LOL.

NOTE: In case, this K-drama vampire flick doesn’t tickle your fancy, you might like “Heartbeat”. But it’s also not scary.

I don’t know if I’d classify The Master’s Sun as a horror show. Sure, there are ghosts, but it’s more of a romantic comedy with supernatural elements. It’s fun and quirky, but not what I’d consider horror. If you’re someone who’s into traditional horror—like, the stuff that really gets under your skin—this show might not satisfy that itch. That being said, the ghostly encounters are creative, and there’s a good mix of suspenseful moments with lighthearted humor. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for something more on the fantasy side rather than actual horror. For me, though, I prefer my horror to be a bit more intense.

I watched The Master’s Sun a few years ago, and I still think about it! What I loved most was the chemistry between the leads. Kong Hyo-Jin and So Ji-Sub absolutely nailed their roles. The show had this perfect balance of being eerie yet heartwarming. Also, I couldn’t get enough of the quirky side characters and all their little subplots. Tae Yi-Ryung’s jealousy was almost comical, and Kang-Woo brought some great moments of tension. The story isn’t just about ghosts, but also about dealing with past traumas and finding love in the most unexpected places. It’s one of those shows that stays with you long after you’ve finished watching. If anyone is on the fence, give it a shot. You won’t regret it!

I'm excited to check out 'Immortal Vampire.' The concept of vampires with a disease seems really interesting. Does it explore the social implications of such a scenario?

I was expecting 'The Master's Sun' and 'Immortal Vampire' to be scary, but I was pleasantly surprised. They're both really well-made shows with interesting storylines and characters. If you're looking for a supernatural K-drama that's not horror-filled, these are definitely worth checking out.

Immortal Vampire takes a different approach to the typical vampire narrative, and I find that refreshing. The concept of vampires being affected by blood-borne diseases like VIDS adds a layer of realism to the story, which makes it more engaging. This isn’t your typical blood-sucking, immortal, invincible vampire trope. Instead, it touches on the fragility of even the most powerful beings, which makes the stakes feel higher. While the movie didn’t get the best ratings, I think the idea alone deserves some credit. It’s a unique take on the vampire genre, blending fantasy with a bit of science fiction. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something that challenges the traditional vampire mythology.

As part of the American audience, usually, anything with ghosts, vampires, witches, zombies, grim reapers, etc. gets lumped under the Horror genre, just because. But most of the Korean dramas that I have watched with ghosts, vampires, witches, zombies, grim reapers, etc. … but they're not scary. However, an American viewer might search the Horror genre looking for K-dramas that have them. If I search the Korean Horror genre on a platform like Viki.com, and watch the movies or series that are in this grouping, I am almost certain that none of them will be scary.
