The Penguin Premieres September 19

Colin Ferrell was The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ cerebral take on Batman (titled simply “The Batman“). The sequel to that movie is still a long way off, but we’ll be seeing Penguin again long before we see (The) Batman again…he stars in his own show starting next September.

Who Penguin is depends on how the adaption casts him. Sometimes he’s a mob boss, sometimes he’s a camp bird-themed supervillain who does bird-themed crimes, and sometimes he’s a toned-down blend of those. Since The Batman was one of those “realistic” takes on the Dark Knight, we get a realistic Penguin: just a mob boss, Italian accent, gold tooth and everything. He doesn’t even go by Oswald Cobblepot. That’s still his name, but he insists everyone call him “Oz Cobb.”

Oz Cobb figures the underworld can be his now that main rival Carmine Falcone died in The Batman. But he didn’t count on Falcone’s kids taking over — and they’re more ruthless than he was! Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, and Alberto Falcone, played by Michael Zegen, play a fierce game of power with Cobb, each fighting to wind up on top. Colin Ferrell reprises his role as Mr. Cobb. No matter how things turn out, we know one thing…Batman won’t stop them because DC won’t let him have a live-action show.

The Penguin also stars Rhenzy Feliz (Marvel’s Runaways), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range), Clancy Brown (Billions), James Madio (The Offer), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy), Scott Cohen (Gilmore Girls) and Carmen Ejogo (Your Honor). Matt Reeves returns, but in an executive producer role…Lauren LeFranc is the showrunner and wrote the first three episodes.

Check out The Penguin on HBO and Max starting September 19. If you end up not liking it, there are always repeats of The Sopranos.

The Penguin has a whole show, but Batman's nowhere to be seen? That's kinda weird, right? Don't get me wrong, I love the Penguin, but wouldn't it be cooler to see him interact with Batman? Maybe they'll tease a future showdown in this show? Or maybe this is all setting up for a bigger Batman universe on HBO Max? It's a little confusing, but hey, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Speaking of Penguin, did you hear they're making a female Penguin in the new Batman animated series? Her name is Oswalda and she's already confirmed. Apparently, she looks like that villain from Matilda. I'm kinda curious to see how that'll work. A female Penguin? That's a twist I didn't see coming.

Is Penguin really that popular to warrant his own show? I mean, don't get me wrong, he's a classic Batman villain, but compared to someone like Harley Quinn or Deathstroke, he's not exactly top-tier. I'm curious to see how they're going to stretch out his character for a whole series.

This announcement has me very intrigued. A series centered on The Penguin offers a unique perspective on the Gotham underworld, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Colin Farrell expands his role. The dynamics between Oz Cobb and the Falcone siblings should add plenty of tension and drama. It’s great to see actors like Rhenzy Feliz and Shohreh Aghdashloo in the mix, as they can definitely elevate the series. While I do miss seeing Batman, I think focusing on these other characters can provide a fresh angle. Plus, with Matt Reeves overseeing things, I trust the storytelling will be top-notch.

I'm not entirely sold on "The Penguin" yet. While Colin Farrell did a decent job in "The Batman," I'm not sure if a whole series focused on his character is necessary. The concept of him battling the Falcone siblings for control of the underworld sounds a bit cliché to me. And let's be honest, without Batman, can it really capture the essence of Gotham's chaos? I guess I'll give it a try, but my expectations are pretty low.
