♦ My Father Was Murdered and My Husband is ???

In “The Lies Within”, the father of Kim Seo-Hui, an assemblyman dies in a tragic car accident.  Initially, the police concluded that it was a suicide. However, when the investigative team, led by Detective Jo Tae-Sik, revisits the scene of the accident, they discover additional clues that indicate that the man was murdered. On the same day of the accident, Kim Seo-Hui’s husband vanished. The police suspect that he is either the murderer or involved in the murder. Kim Seo-Hui knew that her husband and her father often had heated disagreements. But she couldn’t believe he killed hid father-in-law. But she also could not tell the police her husband’s whereabouts. She doesn’t know if he’s missing or dead.

Members of the assemblyman’s political party approach Kim Seo-Hui and insist she take up her father’s mantle and carry on. She hesitates because she knows absolutely nothing about politics. How could she possibly serve as an assemblywoman? But they tell her it won’t be difficult because they will lead her every step of the way. It doesn’t help that Kim Seo-Hui’s mother also pressures her to become a politician. There is nobody that she can turn to for comfort or advice. In addition, the investigators keep questioning her about her husband’s whereabouts. After all, she was the last person to see him. What was their last encounter about? She finally admits that she chased after her husband to give him divorce papers. He had become distant from her and she believed he was having her affair. She wanted to end the marriage.

On the day of her father’s official funeral service, they were in a public place where mourners were gathered to pay their respects. But also, there were children and parents nearby enjoying themselves. A child happened upon a small box sitting out in the open. At the same time, Kim Seo-Hui was reading a poem as part of eulogizing her father, the innocent child opened the box and screamed in horror. The solemn memorial services were interrupted by screaming children whose parents were grabbing them and running away. Everyone turned to see what the commotion was all about. Detective Jo Tae-Sik had arrived on the scene and was the first to examine the package and when he saw what it was, he tried to stop Kim Seo-Hui from looking because he knew she would be shocked. The package contained the severed hand of her missing husband. This is insane!!

♦ My Husband’s Hand Has Appeared But Where is the Rest of Him?

Kim Seo-Hui doesn’t know what to think. Detective Jo Tae-Sik indicated that her husband was a murder suspect. Now his severed hand is delivered in a box and she wonders if he has been kidnapped and is being held somewhere against his will. Where is her husband? Jo Tae-Sik is also baffled. If her husband did not commit the murder and was not an accomplice, will he also become a victim, if the police don’t discover his whereabouts? Even though Kim Seo-Hui has not had time to grieve the loss of her father and try to locate her husband, political party members tell her she doesn’t have time to be concerned with personal matters. She must make sure she gets the necessary votes to sit in her father’s place in the assembly. Kim Seo-Hui is overwhelmed but she does her best to carry on with politics and cooperate with the police investigation.

She was trying to cooperate until she received a phone call. The person demanded money, told her where they could meet, and said they would tell her where her husband was. But she must not get the police involved. She did not tell anyone about the phone call. But the police were already tracking her movements, especially her banking activity. When she made a huge withdrawal from the bank, they knew she had a reason. Jo Tae-Sik followed her to a shipping yard where several containers were either ready to be shipped or unloaded. If it weren’t for Kim Seo-Hui’s screams, he might not have found her so quickly. When he reached her location, there was a man hanging and it looked like he committed suicide. Kim Seo-Hui was devastated. He was the man who said he would tell her where her husband was. How will she ever find him now? Jo Tae-Sik wished he knew how.

At least, Kim Seo-Hui and Jo Tae-Sik are on the same page, i.e. they both want to find her missing husband. But then it happened again. Another body part is found. This time it’s her husband’s leg and foot. Kim Seo-Hui cries out in agony: “Why is this happening? Did my husband do something wrong? Why would anyone do this to him?” Jo Tae-Sik is even more determined to get to the truth. The more Kim Seo-Hui and Jo Tae-Sik search for her missing husband, the more lies they uncover. There is a concerted effort among various parties – politicians, businessmen, etc. – to conceal the truth. It seems Kim Seo-Hui’s father and husband were working on “something” together. They were not at odds with each other, as they appeared to be when in public. They were gathering information and evidence intending to reveal certain crimes and misdeeds to the public. For their due diligence, the father was murdered and the only possible proof that her husband may still be alive are his body parts.
