My Daughter’s Death Was Not an Accident

In “The Guardians” (2017), a group of ordinary people whose lives have been torn apart by violent crime, and by a justice system that failed them when they needed it the most.  Instead of surrendering to grief, they form an underground alliance determined to protect the vulnerable and stop criminals who slip through legal cracks. Their mission isn’t revenge or vengeance. They are a vigilante justice-seeking team who just don’t want others to suffer the way they did.

At the center is Jo Soo-Ji, a former detective and grieving mother whose life imploded after her daughter’s death. She KNOWS the death was not accidental. Her anguish becomes the emotional core of the story. It drives her transformation from someone grieving and barely surviving to someone who channels her pain into fierce purpose. Jo Soo-Ji struggles to balance healing and obsession by stepping deep into the shadows of vigilante justice.

She’s joined by Jang Do-Han, a prosecutor who knows the system from the inside, including exactly where it breaks. He paints himself as a “suck-up”, someone who’ll bow to whoever it takes for him to climb the career ladder. He drives a luxury car to create the impression that he’s a rising star. It’s a rental car. But his calm exterior hides his own buried wounds. They both have wounded hearts, and his relationship with Jo Soo-Ji is multifaceted and ever-changing. The decisions they make as team members constantly challenge the line between justice and illegality.

We’re All in Pain

Three other members complete their vigilante team:

Each of them carries a private tragedy, and their trauma is the quiet internal force shaping their choices. Their professional and personal bonds grow stronger from shared loss. The support system is as fragile as it is powerful.

As their missions intensify, the Guardians navigate an underworld and uncover a web of corruption reaching far beyond individual criminals. They confront not only predators but the systems that protect them. Every step they take puts them in greater danger, but the team remains loyal to each other, focused and determined to balance the scales of justice.

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as MDL.

I subscribe to the KOCOWA Blog, and this Korean drama was recommended as a hidden gem. It’s a gem, alright. Who doesn’t love a vigilante justice team? It’s why all the Charles Bronson “Death Wish” flicks were so popular.
