The Bros ~ Sometimes Hidden Treasure is Not Hidden

“The Bros” is a 2017 Korean movie categorized as Kid and Family, Comedy, Fantasy or Supernatural, streaming on Netflix.

SUMMARY: In “The Bros”, two brothers who never got along, unite to attend their father’s funeral. Each had a different reason for wanting to be there and it had nothing to do with paying with their respects to the deceased. On their way to their hometown they encounter a mysterious woman. They don’t know who she is or why she’s keeps appearing in front of them. But it seems she has something she wants them to know.

♦ Are There Really 2 Golden Buddha Statues?

Two brothers unite to attend their father’s funeral and it is obvious to everyone that neither one of them wants to be at the memorial services or around each other.

• The oldest brother, Lee Suk-Bong, to the family’s dishonor, has never amounted to much. He lectures about Korean culture and fancies himself a loyal patriot for wanting to recover ancient treasures looted by foreign powers. His family called him a dreamer, which would have been OK, if his dreams weren’t so worthless. Nothing he invests in is ever profitable. He is not coming to the funeral to pay his respects but rather to find out what kind of treasures are in his father’s home that he can sell to pay off debts. Most importantly, he heard that 2 golden Buddha statues were buried and his late father had information about where they could be found.

• Lee Joo-Bong is the younger brother. Whereas his older brother is strong, he is the smart one. He has a job with a construction company and made a terrible mistake that could cost him his job. He wants to persuade the family to the property in their hometown of Andong. If he can seal this deal, his boss promises that he will remain employed.

The brothers never agreed with each other or got along. Nevertheless, they were in the car together, driving to the funeral and they got into a fight. So predictable. The car started swerving and because they were not paying attention to the road, they hit something or someone. They’re not sure because they heard a sound as if they hit something but there was nothing on the road. They started looking around in the field alongside the road and found an unconscious woman. They put her in the car intending to take her to the hospital but when she regained consciousness she got out of the car and walked away. She said her name was Oh Ro-Ra.

The Monk and Oh Ro-Ra

Two brothers unite to attend their father’s funeral and it is obvious to everyone that neither Lee Suk-Bong nor Lee Joo-Bong has come for services.  Then this monk shows up saying he’s there to get rid of a ghost. One of the brothers says the trick won’t work on him because he goes to church and doesn’t believe in ghosts. Both brothers think the monk is up to no good. But they don’t have time to deal with him because they have their own “priorities”.

Lee Suk-Bong wants to find the hidden treasures of the 2 golden Buddha statues, and Lee Joo-Bong wants the family to sign consent forms so the company he works for can build a highway through or around the premises. However, their activities keep getting interrupted by Oh Ro-Ra. For some strange reason, this woman keeps appearing in front of Lee Suk-Bong and Lee Joo-Bong. But it’s like she comes out of nowhere. Who is this woman and why is she here?

“The Bros” is for Ma Dong-Seok fans. When he’s not playing a tough guy in action movies, he can be cute in a comedy.

SIMILAR K-DRAMAS: I’ve already watched and reviewed “Miraculous Brothers” which was awesome! But thanks to this Korean film, I’ve added another K-drama about brothers to my watch list. Stay on the lookout for my review of “Inseparable Bros” (2019).
