The Best Trailers From Sony’s PlayStation Showcase
Sony streamed over an hour’s worth of new trailers and gameplay footage from upcoming Playstation 5 titles this afternoon. The reveals ranged from “awright” to “meh,” so we’ve cherry-picked the few we found the most interesting…
The presentation got off to a slow start with several bland-colored shooters revealed in a row, but the first real splash of color belonged to Neva, an upcoming game from the makers of the award-winning GRIS. They don’t seem to have lost the touch; this trailer was more like an animated short designed to give its viewers the maximum feels. Great animation too.
Square’s biggest offering was what we THINK will be the final trailer for Final Fantasy XVI (the thing’s due out in a month, after all). But before then, they wanted to show us this Splatoon ripoff they’re working on where players use foam instead of paint. Is that enough of a difference? Not really, but until now the Switch has held the exclusive on this sort of experience.
The first real surprise of the presentation: a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3? Or “Metal Gear Solid Triangle,” whatever Konami is calling it. We love Snake Eater no matter how many times it’s regurgitated. If you want the original graphics the entire classic MGS lineup will be sold in its original form before then, as the “Metal Gear Master Collection.”
Here’s the Final Fantasy XVI trailer we mentioned earlier. Not much can be said that hasn’t already been said. Early buzz is that it’ll be the return to form that the series has desperately needed; we hope the rumors are right.
Revenant Hill looks for all the world like a sequel to Night in the Woods. Come on, we’ve seen that exact cat in the previous game somewhere. Either it’s by the same people or someone’s getting sued.
It wasn’t much of a shock that Sony’s “big end trailer” would be for Spider-Man 2, but I don’t think we expected to see it so close to being finished. The twelve-minute look at the game starts with a Kraven the Hunter cinematic, then gameplay footage of Peter and Miles working together to stop the Lizard from rampaging through NYC. Guess what — Pete’s got the Alien Costume in this game. Even those with a passing knowledge of Spider-Man lore know that’s not going to work out very well for him.
Finally…Sony showed off a couple of new pieces of hardware. They were a set of PS5-branded earbuds and a new controller called “Project Q” that has an 8-inch screen stuck in the middle of it. They say you’ll be able to play your PS5 anywhere you go with Project Q, as long as the place you’re at has a wi-fi signal that will allow you to stream footage from your PS5 to the controller. We wouldn’t call this a Switch Killer even if Sony thinks it is one. The necessity of needing a PS5 to use it puts it out of that market.
