Terminator 2: Judgment Day Returns To Theaters (In 3D!)

The world will probably never be surprised by a sequel the way they were by Terminator 2 in 1991. James Cameron‘s 1984 original did nothing to resolve the dilemma at the core of its plot…the Machines were still rising, mankind was doomed, it was just a little more likely the leader of the resistance would survive.

T2, as it became popularly known, mesmerized audiences not just with the seemingly unstoppable threat the T-1000 posed, but the groundbreaking “metal man” CG that made him look like nothing that had come before. Arnold’s surprise pivot to ally was not hinted at in any of the trailers and was an opening day surprise — and it worked. Terminator 2 improved upon the first film in every way and provided a satisfying conclusion to the story, despite various attempts since then to continue it (it should say something that nobody has ever succeeded, including Cameron himself).

In honor of the film’s 35th anniversary, StudioCanal, Fathom Entertainment, and Rialto Pictures will re-release Terminator 2 to theaters during the week of its birthday. For some icing on the cake, some of the showings will be the 3D conversion introduced in 2017. The day you get it depends on where you live:

• Aug. 27: Germany, Latin America, and Czech Republic
• Aug. 28: U.S., Italy, and Poland
• Sept. 2: France
• Sept. 3: Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden, and Hungary
• Sept. 4: U.K.

“T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film,” says Cameron. “I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT:  the good guys win against the AI superintelligence!  And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.”
