Made by the developers of Double Stallion, Surfpunk is a co-op ARPG with a tropical twist. Rather than fantastical knights or futuristic marines, you traverse an oceanic world as pirates on surfboards. Drifting from island to island, you loot what you can in a world that collapsed in the past.

The game would be revealed in 2024, showing off its unique style and catching the attention of ARPG fans. After many years of tweaking and maturing, Double Stallion has unleashed a demo for the game. With there being 5 to 10 hours of content to taste, players will have more than enough time to feel out the gameplay and fun of Surfpunk.

AN OCEAN OF POSSIBILITIES, RIPE FOR THE LOOTING

Taking the role as a band of pirates, you and your friends traverse a world ravaged by a past cataclysm. However, opportunity awaits as the old world has left behind treasures to be claimed across abandoned island. All that remains is for you and your friends to hop from island to island to claim it for yourselves.

However, your expeditions are sure to meet with a multitude of monsters in your path, meaning you will need to fight to get what you want. Thankfully, you have your choice of a variety of weapons, each granting a different play style to fit your role. Whether that’s long range strikes with guns or support with a guitar, you have a variety of options and skills to tailor your approach.

After you complete your exploration, you return to your Beastship, a hub that you can customize with the treasures you find. You can also customize your own character as well while onboard, changing equipment and looks and upgrading abilities. If you have nothing to do however, you can always hang out with your fellow pirates as you take a reprieve from adventures.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS TROPICAL ARPG

  • Surf to different islands and face off against monsters as you loot everything in sight before a tsunami strikes.
  • Join up with up to three other players for fun, four player co-op.
  • Every island you find is unique to one another, procedurally generated to make every exploration distinct.
  • Craft up tools and gadgets as you explore islands to assist in your current adventure.
  • Pick up a variety of different weapon classes, including swords, anchors, guns, and even guitars!
  • Customize your personal ship and character, enhance your gear, and upgrade your skills in between adventures.

Surfpunk does not yet have a release date, but there is a demo available for free on Steam. You can also discuss Surfpunk on the PopGeeks Video Game Forum!

This sounds super exciting! I love the idea of combining surfing with looting in an ARPG. It feels like a fresh take in a genre that can sometimes get repetitive. Plus, the public demo means we can all get hands-on experience before the official release. I've always been a fan of games that incorporate unique mechanics like this, can't wait to give it a try on December 16! The developers have a good track record, so I’m hopeful we’re in for a fun ride. Anyone else planning to check it out?

Most ARPG games usually have the same fantasy style with swords and castles, so seeing pirates on surfboards feels different. The island exploration is also nice because every island looks a little different when it generates. Sometimes you find useful items quickly and sometimes it takes longer, which makes the search feel more natural. The tsunami mechanic surprised me because it forces you to move fast instead of slowly clearing everything. I also like that the Beastship works like a hub where you can relax and change your equipment. Playing with friends is probably the best way to enjoy this game. Solo was okay but I can see the design is meant for co-op teamwork. I hope the developers add more enemy variety because after several runs the monsters started to feel similar. Still, for a demo with several hours of content, it shows promise and I will watch how the full game develops.I tried the demo for a few hours and I think the surfing idea is interesting.

Different take on ARPG and I respect it. Not every game needs to be souls-like or Diablo clone. Surfing pirates looting a flooded world is cool. Weapons seem varied enough to try different builds. Just hope the demo runs well on my older PC. If it does I’ll probably stick around for the full release whenever that happens.

Looks like a fun time waster. Co-op looting with surfboards and a giant wave chasing you? Sign me up. The hub ship customization is a nice touch, always like games where you can make your base look cool. Free demo on Steam is all I need to hear. Gonna try it this weekend and see if it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Okay I’m sold just from the screenshots. Tropical post-apocalypse with surfboards and guns? That’s fresh. Love that every island is different thanks to procedural generation. The guitar as a support weapon is genius, my friends are gonna fight over who gets to play bard-pirate. Demo has 5-10 hours? That’s generous, most demos give you like 30 minutes. Respect.

I did not expect a surfing ARPG to work, but after watching gameplay I think it might actually be fun. The movement across water looks smooth and fast which is important because players will travel often. I also like that the game supports four players because pirate adventures should feel like a group activity. Playing alone would probably feel less exciting. The weapon variety is also unusual. Seeing guitars used as support tools made me curious about how different roles work in a team. I hope the skill trees allow players to specialize because that usually keeps co-op games interesting. My biggest question is long term progression. Loot games need strong progression systems or players lose motivation. If Surfpunk adds meaningful upgrades and rare items to chase, it could keep people playing for many hours. For now the demo looks like a good first step.
