Square Leaks Release Date For New Tomb Raider Game By Accident
Tomorrow, Square-Enix will confirm the title of their next Lara-centric game WILL be “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.” They’ll announce that it will be released within 2018. They’ll reveal that it is NOT an XBox exclusive like the second game was. So all we have to do is wait until tomorrow, and we’ll know…..err, what we know now.
Wait, WHY do we know all this? We know thanks to a little coding faux pax from Square. Whoever built the latest version of their Tomb Raider webpage, which is currently counting down to tomorrow’s big reveal, mistakenly included all the information it’s about to display within the HTML code. Poke around and you can find sentences like “Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the climactic finale of Lara’s origin story. Available September 14 2018.” Popgeeks didn’t discover this, the Internet did in general (the original discovery is believed to have come from Twitter, but no one is certain who was first).
The timing makes sense — Square’s big fat Tomb Raider movie is about to see release, so of course they’d drop the big story on a new game at this time; the more publicity the better. And it’s still sort of good timing. A leak of one day is better than a leak of three months, or accidentally displaying the title of the game two years ahead of its release on a laptop in a subway.
If we get more tomorrow (like a trailer) we’ll pass it on, but for now, here’s everything: Shadow of the Tomb Raider comes out September 14 for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC. On April 27 Square will go into a bit more detail and reveal the preorder incentives and Limited Editions that will be available Day One.
For the immediate future, Alicia Vikander will star as Lara in the new Tomb Raider movie on Friday. The review embargo went up today and…..er, it doesn’t look pretty.
