Spyro Reignited Trilogy Coming September 21
Last year the original Crash Bandicoot games were successfully revived in the form of the N-Sane Trilogy on PS4 (and, soon, the Nintendo Switch). So folks who were PS1 children started asking, “if we get Crash, then where’s Spyro?” Right here…it didn’t take long for the current rights holders of Spyro to respond to the crazy sales of Crash’s comeback, and we’re getting a modern HD remake of Spyro’s three Playstation games in one package.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is its name, and it’ll contain all the levels from Spyro, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, with “improved environments, updated controls, brand-new lighting and recreated cinematics.” The only thing missing will be Insomniac Games, who created those titles back in the day but is now feverishly busy on Spider-Man for PS4. Instead, Toys For Bob, who made all those Skylanders games not too long ago, will recreate Spyro’s world.
Why them? Because Skylanders was originally conceived as a Spyro spinoff. It’s hard to remember now, but the original Skylanders game was subtitled “Spyro’s Adventure” and had the dragon on the box. Instead the poor lizard took a backseat to the monsters who popularized the toy-to-game craze. Spyro was still there, just not the focus. He was part of the main cast in Netflix’s Skylanders cartoon (and Crash even appeared in one episode).
But now, maybe, these remastered classics will get a new generation hooked, and Spyro can have his day again. Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be out for Playstation 4 and Xbox One on September 21 (the absence of a Switch version is ridiculous….we’d bet on it showing up next year).
