Spider-Gwen Gets Her Own Animated Spinoff
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has barely been out a few hours and already there is talk from Sony about sequels and spinoffs. One reason is because they’re incredibly poor at managing money (Emoji Movie was one of theirs) but another is because Spider-Verse IS on track to reach #1 at the box office this weekend.
Without giving away too much, the ending to the movie does suggest another adventure in Miles’ future. But the sequel, if one is made, might not star him. Sony is thinking of giving one of Miles’ co-stars, Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen, her own movie.
What would the plot be? It’s too early to know, but we hear she wouldn’t be working solo. Interdimensional shenanigans won’t be the culprit, but competition will. Gwen will meet fellow arachnid-themed superheroines Cindy Moon, who goes by the moniker Silk, and Jessica Drew, also known as Spider-Woman. (One potential problem with that…Gwen calls HERSELF “Spider-Woman” in the recent picture. In the comics her superhero name is “Ghost Spider.”)
Weirdly, Sony also has plans to put Cindy Moon in her own lead role, except this would be live-action. The existence of one project hasn’t cancelled out the other, though at this early stage we have no idea if either film will make it to a finished state.
