Special Yeld Sale Supports Immigrant Rights

Last month Popgeeks published a review of The Magical Land Of Yeld, a tabletop game based on the world created by cartoonist and author Jake Richmond. This world first appeared in his webcomic Modest Medusa before expanding into other mediums. Now the citizens of Yeld are coming to help OUR world with a special charity sale benefiting the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition.

We don’t have to point out this is a rather ugly time in American history, as all our major cities are currently being terrorized by masked goons who tackle and handcuff anyone brown for a salary of about $44K a year. This includes Portland, which contrary to what propaganda would have you believe is not a crime-ridden hellhole, and what crime there is, the immigrant community has little to do with. Both I and Jake live here; it it safe for us to walk outside, we know what we’re talking about.

But even if you don’t live in Portland, you can help by purchasing Yeld stuff within the month of February. 50% of all proceeds the store makes this month will be donated to the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, to raise money to help defend our immigrant friends and neighbors and keep them safe.

Free US shipping is being offered on any order of $90 or more. The cost of the Yeld hardcover rulebook and PDF bundle just happens to be that much. But there’s more for sale too, and Yeld’s executive producer, Sally Hsu, has pledged to personally match any donation out of her own pocket. For any amount this sale ends up raising, twice as much will go to PIRC.

The sale ends on March 1st, at which point the total number of donated funds will be announced.

Jake Richmond’s work is always worth checking out, and this charity angle is solid. Portland isn’t the warzone some people claim, I’ve visited a few times and walked around no problem. Immigrants aren’t the issue here. Glad the Yeld community is stepping up with real help instead of just hashtags. Already grabbed a couple minis and the rulebook. If more small creators did stuff like this the world would be less garbage.

Fifty percent to Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition? That’s a big chunk. Most “charity” sales barely give 10%. And Sally personally matching everything? Respect. I don’t even play tabletop games but I’m buying the bundle anyway because the cause matters more than whether I’ll ever run a session. Shipping’s free over $90 so it’s basically a direct donation with cool art as a thank-you. Doing my part from halfway across the country.

I’m not usually into these indie RPG things but the Modest Medusa comic was funny and sweet years ago. Seeing the Yeld world get used to raise money for immigrants feels right. The matching donation part makes it even better—your $50 becomes $100 to the coalition. Ordered mine this morning. Small actions add up when enough people do them.

This is smart. Ties the game directly to something urgent without being preachy. I respect creators who use their platform for more than likes. Portland’s immigrant community deserves the support, especially now. Grabbed the PDF to start reading it tonight. Might finally try running a game if the rules click. Either way, money goes to a good place.

Huge respect to Jake and Sally for turning a game into direct aid. Most charity bundles feel like an afterthought, but 50% plus matching is real commitment. I’m not even in the US but I still bought the PDF because borders don’t change the fact that targeting immigrants is wrong. Hope they raise a ton. Sale’s only till March 1 so don’t sleep on it.
