The world’s fastest hedgehog may think he can handle anything, but until now he’s only had to deal with enemies less than two stories tall. That’ll change when Sonic meets Godzilla in IDW’s latest crossover special, heading to comic shops this summer.
SONIC X GODZILLA #1 is written by Nick Marino, who’s worked for IDW’s Godzilla comics in the past, and drawn by artist Jack Lawrence, who likewise has drawn for Sonic. The situation is that Godzilla and other assorted kaiju have just suddenly appeared in Sonic’s world without explanation, and Mr. Blue Blur has to figure out why. But he has to be quick about it, or quicker than usual, because Dr. Eggman takes one look at those big beasts and sees POWER. He wants to capture and exploit them — and after seeing what he does to innocent bunnies, imagine how he’d roboticize these folks. Sonic gathers his friends Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow to stand in Eggman’s way. We’re sure Big G will lend his breath to the situation as well.
“I’m doing my best to cook up fun scenarios for Jack to draw, and then I’m making sure my panel counts leave enough room for him to properly play around with the fantastic spectacle that this crossover deserves,” commented Marino. “I’m fascinated by the scale of life, how we perceive lifeforms differently from bacteria to planet-wide ecosystems, from micro to macro. This particular character combination allows me to explore that in a fun way, and it’s been really satisfying. I hope our readers agree that the result is a cohesive mix of these two visual focuses– small speedsters and massive monsters– that delivers the best of both worlds!”
Thanks to IDW’s love of crossovers, both Sonic and Godzilla have met several characters already, but not each other. This one’s easy because the company currently holds the comic rights to both, and needs no negotiating with any other publisher to make it happen. But while we’re on that subject, someone asked a question on Bluesky a couple days ago that has been bugging me ever since…
Unless it’s Sonic x TMNT.For the love of everything, JUST DO THAT ONE ALREADY I’M ON MY KNEES!!! 😭😭

I honestly thought this had happened already. IDW has produced both Sonic and Turtles comics for years. It sounds like the most obvious idea in the world. Why HASN’T Sonic met the Ninja Turtles? What’s the holdup there? What’s the deal, IDW?
No Turtles crossover yet, but Sonic will meet Godzilla this summer. The exact street date for this tale has not been revealed yet.
