Snowpiercer: The Series Premieres May 17 On TNT
The sci-fi action film Snowpiercer developed a large cult following when it was released in 2013. The premise is that after a global natural disaster brings about a new Ice Age, the last remnants of humanity now survive on a perpetually running Noah’s Ark-like train. Why a train? Having not seen the movie myself, I really don’t know, but it feels like an ill-advised decision….humans would be more likely to survive within something stationary.
That is, if they can survive each other. The same social and economic problems that plague humanity today are still present in the future dystopia of Snowpiercer. The train cars are divided into class structures, and the main plot is of the lower class staging a revolt against the elites in the front car.
Now Snowpiercer is about to be reimagined as a TV series. The official description for the pilot reads thus:
Snowpiercer, the Great Ark Train, has kept the last remnants of humanity alive for almost seven years. A rigid class system maintains order, with First Class holding power over workers, while a condemned Prison Class struggles to survive in the Tail. Now, a grisly murder is stoking class division, so Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), the powerful head of hospitality, deputizes a dangerous rebel to help solve the killing — Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs), the world’s only surviving homicide detective.
There’s only one homicide detective? That sucks, but so does everything else about life in Snowpiercer. The TV series stars Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly, and premieres Sunday, May 17 at 9 PM on TNT.
