Simon Kinberg Still Wants a Fantastic Four Sequel
Ok, so it’s been official for a while, but the recent Fantastic Four film is a major flop. It’s been in theaters for over a month and has only grossed $55 million domestically. For comparison, Ant-Man did $60 million its first weekend.
This is crushing for Fox, as they had a chance to capitalize on the Marvel properties they owned, and possibly share a universe of their own with the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
Simon Kinberg, who helped produce the original, still wants to do a sequel though. Which if you recall, was actually greenlit before the first one came out!
“I’m really focused on the next one,” said Kinberg to MTV. “I was obviously disappointed. I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like [‘Fantastic Four’]. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know… We’re figuring out what [a ‘Fantastic Four’ sequel] would be. I’d like that to happen.”
To be fair, I think many people would like to see a good Fantsatic Four film, the question is, will it actually nail the essence of what Fantastic Four is? Who will write it? Especially since former writer/director Josh Trank will not be getting that position.
If this happens? It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold.
