Sequel Announced For It Follows

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to….well, anywhere, one of last decade’s most terrifying monsters has returned. Distributor Neon has announced a sequel to It Follows is now in development, with plans to start shooting sometime next year.

It Follows was released in 2014 and became one of the most successful indie horror projects ever made, taking in over $21 million from just a $1 million budget. It launched the career of its central actress Maika Monroe, who went on to appear in movies like Independence Day: Resurgence and Honey Boy, as well as its director, Robert Mitchell. Both of them are returning for the sequel.

In the original movie Jay Height, Monroe’s character, decides to sleep with her boyfriend and then wakes up the next morning tied to a chair. She learns from him she’s been given the worst STD possible: a curse in which a monster that can assume the form of any human will relentlessly stalk her until it kills her. At that point it’ll turn around and find HIM, and once it kills him it’ll keep moving down the line like that.

The only way to get rid of the curse, and the monster, is to pass it on through sex, but Jay is unsure she wants to do something like that to anyone. But she has to figure it out quick, because though the monster moves slow, it never stop moving, and will never stop progressing toward her until it achieves its goal.

So what would a sequel to It Follows be called? It Follows Again? It Still Follows? They did better than that…..the official title is They Follow, implying there’s now more than one monster out there. We should learn more in 2024.

I enjoyed It Follows, but sequels can be tricky. Hope They Follow doesn't dilute the original's impact. The whole concept of the monster was unique, but more of them? Let's see if it lives up to the first one.

Ugh, really? Sequels are so hit or miss. It Follows was good on its own; I don't want it ruined with a mediocre follow-up. Hollywood should come up with fresh ideas instead of recycling successful ones.

Okay, I'm intrigued. They Follow sounds interesting with the multiple monsters angle. Wonder how they'll expand the lore. Hoping for some unexpected twists and not just a rehash of the original. Count me cautiously optimistic.

The title, They Follows, makes me think the monster is non-binary.
