SDCC 2017: There’s A Reason For All The DCEU Batman Films
If you look at the DCEU right now, it’s in a very interesting place. What started with Man of Steel, then grew (and in some peoples eyes faltered) with Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, then rose like a phoenix with Wonder Woman, and now has a slate of films to come with conflicting reports to say when and with who, you might be forgiven by thinking it’s a bloody mess.
One of the biggest curiosities though is by far that there are 5 Batman-related films coming. There’s The Batman, Nightwing, Gotham City Sirens, Batgirl, and if rumors are to be believed, a possible Harley Quinn vs. Joker film. That’s a lot of focus on the Batman world. Well, in an interview at San Diego Comic Con, President of DC Comics Geoff Johns talked with IGN and noted that there’s a very good reason for this focus:
“For Batman, what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman. It’s been way too long since we’ve seen an expansion of that universe. We are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon. It’s going to be super-exciting. He’s gonna start that next year. That’s just the start. We want to explore the Batman universe in a very big, new way. Matt Reeves is coming on to do Batman now. We don’t want to do the same thing that has been done before. We want to build it out just like we built it out in the comics.”
By “out of the comics” he’s talking about the large number of Batman titles that all have a very unique identity. And its like that’s what we’re getting here. More is likely to come when Warner Bros. comes to SDCC later tonight to show off what’s coming.
