Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto surprised everyone this week by strongly implying he was about to end his hit manga series after 231 chapters. While it seemed like things were coming to a conclusion in Denji’s latest battle, there was no reason there couldn’t be a Part 3 of the series where a new antagonist could surface. But then you had this: Denji’s chainsaw dog Pochita seeming to break the fourth wall and tell him “yeah, maybe things are ending, but that could be a good thing.”

This chapter first went live on the Shonen Jump app where the final panel bore the caption “Final chapter coming 3/24.” A day later it said “To be continued” instead, but not before causing widespread fan panic. An innocent mistake? A mistranslation? Or is Chainsaw Man really hanging it up out of nowhere?
We have to inform you…it’s the latter. VIZ Media provided a statement to the press when prodded about this: “The Shonen Jump team have confirmed Chainsaw Man is ending but details are yet to be confirmed.” Sorry, but Pochita’s comment really was meant for the readers. There’s suddenly just one more chapter to enjoy. Smiling Friends fans know the feeling — they’re in a similar situation with the cartoon’s makers abruptly calling it quits, leaving just two unaired episodes.
Followers of the anime, though, have a while before this affects them. Plenty of material from the Chainsaw Man manga has yet to be adapted. It does, however, put an end date on the whole thing (though we’ve seen through Attack On Titan how anime makers will find ways to drag endings out as long as possible).
The final chapter of Chainsaw Man goes live on the Shonen Jump app March 24.
