Purple Mouth ~ I’m Blind But I See With My Imagination

Purple Mouth” is a 2024 Crime, Thriller, Noir Korean movie available to watch free on Tubi TV.

SUMMARY: A man is deep in debt and a crime lord makes him an offer as to how he can pay off that debt? Is it an offer he should refuse?

It’s Not So Bad to Having No Eyes If You Can Imagine

In “Purple Mouth”, Jinsoo betrays his girlfriend, Heyoung, in the worst way. Well! It could have been worse than that. He could have sold all of her organs to pay off his debt. But he only sold her precious crystal clear eyes. After the eye operation, his girlfriend disappears. He thought they had killed her.

His girlfriend is a novelist. Even without her eyes she still has an imagination and can write a goooood story. She hired a ghostwriter, Baek Dongho, a guy who also happens to be in debt with the same crime lord. Jinsoo was not only in debt to the crime lord but he also works for him. There is another guy in the same situation, i.e. he owed the crime lord money to pay his debt too. The guy had been dodging the gangster because he didn’t have the money, so Jinsoo is told to hang out at his place until he showed up.

The other debtor finally showed up and Jinsoo demanded money. The guy says he’s a ghostwriter but he has not been paid yet. When he gets his payment he will pay his debt. He let Jinsoo read his manuscript. Jinsoo is shocked! The manuscript is the exact story of what he did to his girlfriend. But the story does not have an ending. Uumm … if he’s the ghostwriter, who is the real writer? The real writer is his former girlfriend Heyoung. Who else?

Jinsoo tracks her down. He tries to ask for forgiveness but also asked if the story she is writing is for REVENGE. If so, how does it end? But she had not written the end of the story yet. But she tells Jinsoo or rather promises him that the ending will be very interesting.

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb rating: (no rating) out of 10 stars
  • MyDramaList: (no rating) out of 10 stars

My personal rating is 8 out of 10 stars.

Trying to find info on “Purple Mouth” was very frustrating. The search engine results kept linking this movie to “Big Mouth”, which is a Hulu Original Korean drama series released in 2022. (???) It was also compared to a 2022 Korean movie titled “Mother Midnight” which is available on Tubi (which has an IMDb rating of 7.3 out of 10 stars).

Purple Mouth” is slow-moving. The film gives off an artsy/low-budget/independent film vibe. It is rated for a mature audience and is about an hour. You won’t have time to decide if you love it or hate it. LOL. The one thing I don’t get is … why is this movie titled “Purple Mouth”? (O.o)

The blind woman using a ghostwriter to tell her story of revenge adds a layer of complexity. Is this a straightforward revenge plot, or is there something more metaphorical going on?

The lack of online reviews and information is a major red flag. It makes it difficult to assess the film's quality or execution.

The reviewer's positive rating is encouraging, but their own frustration in finding information suggests the movie might be obscure or not widely seen.

The slow-burn, independent film vibe could be a turn-off for some viewers who prefer fast-paced action.

Feels like a dark and moody neo-noir film, right up my alley. A crime lord, a desperate man, a blind woman seeking revenge through storytelling – all the ingredients for a compelling thriller are there.

The whole "ghostwriter" situation adds another layer of mystery. Is the writer helping the girlfriend, or is there something else going on?The lack of online presence for this movie is frustrating, though. No ratings on MyDramaList or IMDb makes it hard to gauge its quality.
The comparison to "Mother Midnight" is interesting, and I might check that out as a reference point.

This premise seems rich with potential, especially the metaphorical layers that could be at play. A blind protagonist using a ghostwriter might symbolize the reliance on others to give shape to one’s narrative or control over a situation. Revenge itself is often deeply personal, so introducing a proxy adds tension. It makes me wonder whether the film explores themes of autonomy, trust, and manipulation. The lack of information is frustrating, but sometimes obscure films hold hidden gems worth the effort.

I love the sound of this movie’s premise! Using a ghostwriter for revenge isn’t just unique; it’s thought-provoking. The dynamic between the blind protagonist and their ghostwriter must be layered with complexity and tension. The slow-burn aspect suggests the film takes its time to build atmosphere and character depth. I’d rather take a chance on a lesser-known film with a unique angle than something formulaic.

The psychological torment Park Jung-Woo must endure is unimaginable. Losing your family is devastating enough, but to be accused of their murder? And then not knowing if you might actually be guilty? That’s a nightmare. I find it compelling that Seo Eun-Hye, despite her history with him, believes in his right to a fair trial. It’s a reminder of how vital integrity and empathy are in the pursuit of justice. This story is both haunting and inspiring, and it seems to highlight the resilience of the human spirit.
