Peter Jackson Working On Script For Second Tintin Movie

Here’s something we didn’t expect to hear today but are pleased to. Recently at the Cannes Film Festival, director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, some mediocre extended cut Hobbit thing) said he’s at work on the script for a followup to his 2011 animated feature The Adventures Of Tintin.

“I’ve been working with Fran [Walsh] on another Tintin script, I was writing it in the hotel room here,” Jackson said on stage at Cannes. “It’s an active real thing, and I’m getting back into the Tintin world, and I actually love it.”

If you don’t know why this is a good thing, you evidently have not seen the movie. We don’t blame you for that, as it was not a big splash, though it made back its budget. But just trust us — the film is a blast and a half. I was savvy enough to catch The Adventures Of Tintin in theaters and it was very faithful to the Franco-Belgian comic, yet updated it successfully for modern times. It was actually not just Jackson’s project…it was a co-production with Steven Spielberg, who directed the first movie.

The deal the two men apparently made was that Spielberg could direct the first movie and Jackson could direct the second. “Steven did his film, then for 15 years, I haven’t made mine. I feel very awkward about that,” Jackson admitted to his audience.

In the event that Jackson doesn’t get to make another Tintin movie, well, you can make your own Tintin movie. The earliest version of the character fell into public domain last year.
