We don’t know what took it so long, but out of nowhere Warner Bros has announced a physical media release for one of the most treasured cartoons of last decade, Over The Garden Wall. The set could have come out ten years ago, but it came out now.
Over The Garden Wall is an eight-part miniseries created by Patrick McHale that first aired in 2014. It concerns Wirt and Greg, two lost kids, as they navigate their way through a dark and spooky forest. They make friends, like the bluebird Beatrice, enemies, like witches and monsters, and middle-of-the-road “can I trust this guy” characters like the Woodsman. Based on McHale’s indie short Tome of the Unknown, the story is incredibly well-written and became a Halloween staple on Cartoon Network, as well as a seasonal tradition for many, etched into the fall like pumpkin spice.
It might’ve made more sense to release this set last October, but….we should stop complaining and just be grateful to have it. A UK release happened last year, and it had several bonus features…will they make the trek overseas or is this disappointingly bare-bones? If the package shots on Amazon are anything to go by….the bonus features DID make it. They include episode commentaries, the Tome of the Unknown short, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and an alternate “composer’s cut” of the series.
Over The Garden Wall features the voices of Elijah Wood as Wirt, Collin Dean as Greg, Melanie Lynskey as Beatrice, and Christopher Lloyd as the Woodsman, among others. The Blu-Ray will hit the market April 7. IT’S A ROCK FACT!
