Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Our First Real Look At Spider-Man: Brand New Day

It’s been five long years since Spider-Man: No Way Home entered theaters and “ended” the Tom Holland “trilogy” with what was essentially a baked-in reboot. The mess of Peter Parker’s life was wiped away by Doctor Strange, with the unfortunate side effect that his friends wouldn’t remember him either. Were there to be a fourth movie, he’d have to start all over again.

Believe it or not, five years later in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it appears nothing’s changed for Parker at all. He’s STILL trying to find the right way to break it to MJ and Ned that they have a past with him they’re not aware of. And he doesn’t seem to have the hang of the superhero business either. “Same Old Day” is more like it. He gets hit by cars more than once in this trailer. And if that wasn’t bad enough…is he turning INTO a spider?

There are clips that suggest the classic “Man-Spider” arc from the comics and 90s TV show. Parker wakes up covered in webbing and doesn’t know where it came from…well, he DOES know where it came from, he just doesn’t want to think about what orifice. Maybe Bruce Banner, who appears to be his college science teacher, can help him discover a cure.

Rumors of crossover elements between this PG-13 movie and Disney+’s TV-MA adult Marvel dramas are true. The Punisher shows up in one scene, long enough for Parker to attempt to clean up his mouth. The Hand shows up near the end, leaping into action as they prepare to slice and dice Spidey up. And there are more characters…a LOT more. Scorpion is back for the first time since Movie 1 and they still won’t tell us who Sadie Sink is. “Jean Grey” is one popular fan theory, and now we’ll be let down if it isn’t.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have written all previous Tom Holland Spider-Mans. The movie swings into theaters July 31.

I actually like that Peter is still struggling after five years. For me it feels more real. Not everything gets fixed fast, even in superhero stories. Him still thinking about how to tell MJ and Ned makes sense because that is not an easy thing to say. If someone told me we had a past together, I would not believe it right away. I also think him still making mistakes as Spider-Man is fine. He is young and learning never really stops. The Man-Spider idea is interesting but also a bit strange. I hope they explain it clearly and not just use it for shock value. The crossover with Punisher and The Hand sounds exciting, but I worry it might be too crowded. I prefer when the story stays focused on Peter and his personal problems first.

Straight up, this feels like the movie we shouldโ€™ve gotten right after No Way Home. Peter starting over, new threats, old enemies returning. The Man-Spider tease is wild but Iโ€™m here for it. Punisher showing up just to get told off by Spider-Man is perfect. The Hand fight at the end gave me chills. This might actually be good.

Not gonna lie Iโ€™m hyped. Peter still hiding his identity from MJ and Ned after all this time feels painful but honest. The transformation stuff looks creepy in a good way. Scorpion is back, Punisher cameo, The Hand, maybe Jean Grey? They packed a lot in this trailer. As long as they donโ€™t ruin the character again Iโ€™m all in for Brand New Day.

I am honestly more interested in the mystery of Sadie Sinkโ€™s role than anything else. The rumor about Jean Grey sounds big, maybe too big. If they bring X-Men elements, it can change everything for Spider-Man. I just hope they do not create expectations they cannot meet. About Peter, I think his situation is sad but also a bit repetitive now. I want to see him build new friendships, not only try to bring back the old ones. The action with The Hand sounds intense, so I expect better fight scenes this time. I also like that the same writers are back, because at least the tone will feel consistent.

I am excited but also careful with my expectations. The trailer shows many ideas, maybe too many. Man-Spider, Punisher, The Hand, Scorpion, mystery character, and Peterโ€™s personal life. That is a lot for one movie. I prefer when a film focuses on one main problem. Still, I think Tom Holland can carry the role well. He is good at showing confusion and emotion. I also like that Bruce Banner is part of the story. A teacher role for him is something new. I just hope the story feels connected and not like different pieces put together.

Five years later and Peter still hasnโ€™t figured out how to tell MJ and Ned โ€œhey remember me, we used to be bestiesโ€? Bro is stuck in the same loop. Then he wakes up wrapped in his own web like a burrito and starts panicking about which body part shot it out. Punisher shows up and Peter immediately becomes a walking swear jar. Iโ€™m dying. This is gonna be ridiculous.

Iโ€™m not gonna lie, Iโ€™m a little disappointed. Five whole years and Peterโ€™s life is still a mess. Still hiding secrets, still getting yeeted by random cars twice in the trailer. Now heโ€™s turning into Man-Spider? My guy woke up in a web cocoon and immediately regretted every decision. At least Bruce Banner is his teacher now, maybe he can grade the spider mutation on a curve. Punisher cameo better be funn

I donโ€™t know how to feel. Trailer has cool moments but the โ€œhe still hasnโ€™t told themโ€ plot is getting ancient. Peter getting hit by cars twice made me laugh harder than it should. Then the whole turning into giant spider thing, my dude is one bad night away from growing eight legs. Punisher cameo where Peter scolds his language is the highlight. Hope they donโ€™t make the mutation last too long.
