Star Wars Starfighter

Our First Filtered Look At Star Wars Starfighter

We’re used to hearing two things about theatrical Star Wars projects: the day they get announced, and the day they get cancelled. We’ve learned not to expect any movies to get off the ground, with the exception of The Mandalorian and Grogu, as there’s no way that cash cow is getting shelved. So with that being said, today’s a special day because it’s the day Lucasfilm released a shot from the set of Star Wars Starfighter. This is the REAL announcement that we’re getting such a picture.

Disney went for “art” here and ran the photo through a black-and-white filter. As far as we know the actual movie will not be in black and white (though a B&W Star Wars could be novel if dome right). It’s actor Ryan Gosling sitting with fellow actor Flynn Gray on what looks to be a landspeeder. Guess they’re saving the actual starfighter for a later reveal.

Gosling and Gray are playing the main characters of Star Wars Starfighter — neither of their names have been revealed, but Gosling plays someone who must “protect his young nephew against evil pursuers.” Gray is the nephew. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman and Daniel Ings.

Also, the movie has nothing to do with the video game of the same name that came out in 2001 and was set during the prequel trilogy. THIS movie is a story taking place during the post-sequel trilogy years…a period of time we haven’t seen before.

Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Deadpool and Wolverine) is directing, from a script written by Jonathan Topper (Warrior, Your Friends and Neighbors). Star Wars Starfighter is set to be released May 28, 2027…The Mandalorian and Grogu will come well before then in May of 2026.

I think it is smart that they set this story after the sequel trilogy. That part of the timeline has been empty, and it gives the writers more freedom to invent new conflicts without breaking what came before. I am curious how Ryan Gosling will fit into the Star Wars universe. He usually plays very quiet but strong characters, so I can imagine him as someone carrying responsibility. I do hope the film shows more about how the galaxy is trying to recover after the First Order. If it only focuses on a small family story, it might feel too small for Star Wars.

To me, the casting is what makes this project interesting. Mia Goth and Amy Adams in the same film means we will probably get both dramatic weight and unusual energy. Star Wars has always mixed well-known actors with new faces, so this follows the tradition. I just hope the characters are written well.

I like the idea of exploring family bonds in Star Wars. Gosling protecting his nephew feels more grounded than the usual galaxy-wide battles. It reminds me of how The Mandalorian worked because of the relationship between Din and Grogu. If they write the uncle-nephew bond well, the story can feel fresh even if there are not many new ships or Jedi.

For me, Star Wars has always been about imagination, so I hope this film does not just repeat what we already know. We do not need another Empire copy. The post-sequel timeline gives them the chance to show something totally new: maybe strange governments, different Force users, or unknown enemies. That is what I want to see.

I lost most of my trust in Lucasfilm under Kathleen Kennedy. Too many projects were cancelled, and the sequels left me disappointed. Seeing this new movie announced makes me nervous more than excited. I do not want another broken promise. They can show photos, but if Kennedy is still in charge, I do not believe the film will survive until 2027.
