Horror graphic novelist Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Harrow County, Basilisk) is about to debut his latest creation, Lamentation. The second issue was announced today by publisher Oni Press for a June street date. Three issues are planned altogether, but they will contain more pages than a traditional stapled floppy comic book usually does.
In Issue 1 Razide’s Lament, the new play at the Requiem Theatre, was announced and casting was open. Struggling actress Jennifer managed to nab the lead role, and is excited for what it could mean for her career. Little does she realize it could stop before it starts — due to her death. As the days of rehearsal pass by, Jennifer gets eerie feelings as to what’s going on. The director is constantly angry, and his scripts are continually revised, becoming darker and more violent. And when she thinks about it, did her landing this job feel a little TOO easy? Is it too late to look for a different vocation? Apparently so — she’s now trapped in the building.
Oni’s description for Issue 2 reads as thus: “Trapped within the Requiem Theater, lead actress Jennifer fights for her life and freedom as threats encroach from the worlds outside and within the play. When the mysterious Prince Razide selects her as his bride, new dangers emerge, and she still doesn’t know who, or what, lies beneath the prince’s mask. And, soon, Razide himself will take center stage to cross the threshold into the unholy darkness that lies just beyond…”
And no, you didn’t miss anything — Issue 1 of Lamentation isn’t even out yet. Comic publishers just like to send out their press releases super-early (observe that we publish DC solicitations three months in advance). Lamentation #2 will feature covers by Yanick Paquette (Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman: Earth-Two) and John Bivens (Dark Engine, Old Wounds). Look for the first issue of Lamentation in comic shops May 3, and the second in the same locations June 7.
