Out of all the IPs that have been adapted into Lego form, there’s one popular franchise that’s been under-served….where are the Lego sets for One Piece? Think of the spectacular and exotic locations on the Grand Line you could build! Think of a brick-constructed Going Merry or Thousand Sunny! Think of a world where Buggy wouldn’t feel so powerful because EVERYBODY’S limbs are removable.
Looks like the Danish company is finally correcting this error — they announced One Piece Lego sets this morning with no particular release date, but a promise that we’ll be seeing what the sets look like soon. But wait a minute….what’s that red logo on top of the One Piece font?
Ah….I see. They took a different path to get here…these sets will be based on the live-action Netflix series, not the long-running anime or manga. Which is good news in and of itself…it means the Netflix show is strong enough to support merchandise, and that will make a difference in execs’ minds the next time season renewal comes up.
“This is a truly special collaboration. For the first time, LEGO play and the exciting world of anime meet. Building the world of ONE PIECE, as depicted in the Netflix live-action adaptation, in LEGO brick form has been such an exciting challenge and I couldn’t be more excited for fans to experience [it],” said Lena Dixen, Senior Vice President for Core Businesses at the LEGO Group. “Throughout this project with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, it has been an exciting, collaborative process, and I think that shows in all the grand adventures we will begin to unveil soon.”
Whenever Lego decides to show what these sets look like, we’ll pass on the photos. We expect One Piece and Lego to unify sometime later this year.
