NYCC 2018: George RR Martin’s Creepy New Nightflyers
Thanks to Game of Thrones, George RR Martin is one of the most famous authors on Earth. Rather than finishing the last few novels, Martin has chosen to spend his remaining years on Earth making other shows. With his latest, the 10-episode miniseries Nightflyers, he’s pivoting away from fantasy and trying his hand at sci-fi horror.
Set in the year 2093, the horror drama follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard the Nightflyer, in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.
Nightflyers stars Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), Angus Sampson (Fargo Season 2), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship), Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire), David Ajala (Falling Water) and Brían F. O’Byrne (Aquarius).
Now for the hard part….watching it. Nightflyers will air its first episode on Sunday, December 2, followed by four more every night through December 6. It’ll then repeat the same from December 9 through December 13. That’s two weeks in a row, one episode per weeknight.
Odds are, for at least one of those days, you have something else on another network that you’d like to watch. SyFy is either asking for an unrealistic commitment, or just shrugging and committing itself to the DVR experience. Frankly, I’m still mad about their burying 12 Monkeys in a similar fashion.
The crew looks more sullen than scared. They would scream, but in space, no one can hear you do that. Nightflyers airs on SyFy this December.
