Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Revealed

It may have been the worst kept secret of 2025, but at last Nintendo admits it: the Switch 2 is coming sometime this year. A splashy new video heralded the device at around six this morning, demonstrating its surface differences from the original Switch (nothing much in the way of technical details…yet).

Just like everyone predicted, the Switch 2’s name is actually “Switch 2.” It’s slightly bigger in size, with more rounded corners (the dock / charge taco is rounded as well). The Joy-Cons attach magnetically to the sides of the device. The most curious part of the video shows the Joy-Cons sliding into wired holders and skating along the ground; it suggests they’ll be able to perform the functions of a mouse, though for what purpose no one knows.

Backwards compatibility was also confirmed, but Nintendo added that “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Just so no one panics, it’s common for BC functionality to not work with a handful of titles. Usually this number is very small and we expect that to be the case here. As for new Switch 2 software, only one game was hinted at — Mario Kart 9. The track and number of contestants shown is rather large, which keeps with the rumor that MK9 could support up to 24 racers at once.

For more substantial info, we’ll have to wait for April 2….that’s when Nintendo plans to release a Direct video detailing everything about the Switch 2, including maybe its release date. Shortly after that, those who live in big cities will get the chance to try demo units at “Switch 2 Experience” events around the world…

I’m so hyped for the Switch 2! The fact that it’s backward compatible is a relief because I’ve got a huge library of games I’m not ready to give up. And Mario Kart 9 with potentially 24 racers? That’s going to be chaos in the best way possible.

It’s great to see Nintendo continuing the Switch legacy. The original Switch was a game-changer for me, especially with titles like Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing. The idea of carrying over most of my library to the new console feels like they’re honoring that history. Mario Kart 9 is exciting, but I hope they also give us updates or sequels to other classics like Splatoon and Smash Bros.

This sounds cool, but honestly, I just want to know if it’s going to be easy to set up and use. I’m not super tech-savvy, so I don’t care much about the specs or new features unless they’re super intuitive. As long as I can play my favorite games and maybe discover some new ones, I’m happy. I might even check out one of those demo events if they’re not too crowded.

Nintendo’s marketing strategy is brilliant as always, but I can’t help feeling like they’re holding back too much information. The Joy-Con mouse thing is intriguing, but it also feels like one of those features that could end up being underutilized. Backward compatibility is nice, but why the caveat about certain games? It’s 2025; this shouldn’t be an issue anymore. I’ll keep an eye on the updates, but I’m approaching this with cautious optimism.

The lack of technical details is frustrating. Are we getting 4K resolution? Improved frame rates? A better battery life? I need to know what kind of hardware we’re dealing with before I can decide if the Switch 2 is worth upgrading to. The Joy-Con mouse feature is intriguing, but I wonder if it’s just a gimmick or something developers will actually use creatively. Here’s hoping the April Direct answers these questions.

Nintendo can pretty much take my money right now. I’ve been waiting for the Switch 2 announcement forever, and it sounds amazing already. The backward compatibility means I won’t lose access to my favorite games, and the new features like the Joy-Con mouse have me excited for what developers might come up with. I’ll probably try to attend the demo event in LA—I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

It’s exciting to see Nintendo stick to the hybrid console concept that made the Switch so revolutionary. The magnetic Joy-Cons and the potential mouse functionality are intriguing, but I hope these changes don’t come at the expense of reliability. The original Joy-Cons had drift issues, and I’d like to see that addressed in this iteration. As for Mario Kart 9, it’s about time! I’ve always loved the series, and the idea of 24 racers at once sounds like a game-changer. Here’s hoping they reveal more classic tracks and new modes in the upcoming Direct.
