Next Generation Mortal Kombat On The Way?
A new Mortal Kombat game might be making an appearance in the very near future if a leaked poster found by a member of Reddit is anything to go by. The leaked poster shows a shattered spine with the words “Who’s Next?” accompanied by the series’ logo.
The rumoured game would be the first appearance of the franchise on next generation consoles and the tenth official entry in the series. It would also fill a hole for fighting game enthusiasts as there is very little choice currently available for either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise, also changed his profile picture on Twitter to the logo used in the poster supporting its veracity. Coupled with the cryptic postings he has been making for a while now, as noted by Polygon. This could mean that an official announcement about the next instalment could be well on its way.
The Mortal Kombat series was created in 1992 and became an instant hit, spawning a number of sequels and remakes. The series is famous for its grotesque special effects and over the top finishing moves that show off plenty of gore.
Its popularity even led to the release of a movie of the same name in 1995 and a sequel in 1997. The last full Mortal Kombat release was the 2012 title Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition, an update of the 2011 game that hit store shelves in 2011.
While it has been overtaken by other fighting games such as Street Fighter and Tekken the series still has a strong following and it makes sense that a new game would be set to release. Especially considering that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been on the market for several months now.
Polygon’s analysis of Boon’s tweets suggest a countdown to the 2 June, which may mean we get more information about the supposed game then. We’ll keep you posted and bring you any updates as they happen.
