Nancy Drew’s Fourth Season Will Be Its Last
Hurry and finish your plate — the Claw is about to close its doors for good. The CW and the producers of Nancy Drew have confirmed the upcoming fourth season of the series will be the last one.
“It has been the greatest pleasure to begin my career as one small part of Nancy Drew’s endless legacy,” says Kennedy McMann, the best Nancy to ever Drew it up onscreen. “What a privilege to walk in her shoes for as long as I have, to be inspired by her and to grow with her. I wish our incredible fans could feel the heart and passion of our crew that has been ever-present on and off screen, day in and day out since the very beginning. You are every bit a part of this incredible show as we are. Thank you, thank you, thank you for every ounce of passion and kindness you have shared with me and with each other.”
As someone who has said multiple times that Nancy Drew is the best show The CW has on the air right now….I’m honestly relieved. I’ll explain why. This series has never been treated kindly by its network. It doesn’t have the Netflix bump that shows before it had because it went on the air right after that deal expired (you gotta dig deep into the HBO Max library to find where this one’s streaming). And The CW death-slotted Season 3, putting it on Fridays behind Penn and Teller. Since you reap what you sow, it got some of the lowest ratings of any network show that season. When you put all this together, the fact that it got a Season 4 is some kind of miracle, and that miracle was unlikely to be repeated, especially now that The CW is transforming into a game show network for seniors.
The best fate would be if Nancy Drew voluntarily cut itself off here and wrapped up the entire story with Season 4, going out on its own terms. And thankfully, that’s exactly what they are doing. The series is currently still filming in Canada. They have time. This will be a real, satisfying conclusion (unlike the stuff that got cancelled last May — thanks for the crappy ending to LoT, CW).
I’ll miss Nancy Drew, its clever spin on an age-old property, and The CW itself. The return of the show has still not been scheduled, but it’ll be sometime in 2023.
