Nancy Drew Returns For Final Season May 31
The CW has at last revealed when we can expect our last trip to Horseshoe Bay to begin. Nancy Drew’s fourth and final season will start May 31 and run on Wednesday evenings, according to the network, which has been unloaded to nationwide affiliate owner Nexstar to do whatever they please with.
I have said many times that I love this show and its new spin on an ancient property. In case you don’t remember where everything left off, The CW has provided this handy synopsis of where everyone will be in their lives come the premiere:
The new season begins as Nancy launches a new investigation to find a group of missing bodies from Horseshoe Bay’s cemetery that have been dug up and stolen—or have possibly risen. As Nancy is drawn into this ghostly case, a string of unexplained paranormal crimes leads the Drew Crew to believe that the literal sins of the town’s past have returned to haunt the living. Meanwhile, Nancy struggles with yearning for Ace, the man she loves. But when a slow-burning attraction begins between Nancy and the son of Ryan Hudson’s newest enemy, Nancy must decide whether this love interest is worth the ire of both her father and Ace —whose own heart may also be tempted by a new relationship. Nancy’s exploits this season will bring the Drew Crew numerous standalone cases, stunning twists, humor, and unexpected romances as they are drawn into a season-long mystery unlike any they have had to solve before. When Nancy’s efforts to protect her seaside hometown from the sins of its past backfire, she must do the unthinkable to save her friends from both the supernatural and earthbound threats coming for them—and it could cost her everything, and everyone, she’s ever loved.
George’s desire for justice has brought her fighting spirit to the courtroom as an aspiring law school student; Nick, whose broken engagement with George has left him single, is back on the dating scene, and focused on becoming a rising star as a local businessman; Bess is eager to become the town’s guardian of dangerous supernatural secrets, only to encounter a threatening new foe who’s hellbent on leading a witch-hunt to undermine her mission; and Nancy’s star-crossed love Ace must confront the deathly curse keeping him and Nancy from acting on their feelings for each other.
Boy, is that whole Ace thing stupid or what? Sorry, I don’t have to like EVERYTHING about the show.
You might think being dumped in the summer is the dying network’s final insult to their best series, but it will have a companion. Riverdale, that one series that late-era CW is best known for, returns March 29 and will run new episodes alongside Nancy Drew for the summer (it has 20 to burn, she has 13). When we last left our middle-America crew, Jughead had woken up to find everyone zapped to the 1950s! That is not remotely the weirdest thing the series has done, but it will undoubtedly lead somewhere strange.
The network HAS renewed one series for the 2023-24 season, but it’s All-American. Nexstar promised two. We can all but guarantee that other one will be Walker, since they’re not only The CW’s two currently highest-rated shows, they’re also its blandest.
Both Nancy Drew and Riverdale will end their runs on August 23, a day we can consider the end of The CW itself (even if it goes on beyond that point). It really will be the end of an era since no other broadcast network would dare put on something as bizarre as Riverdale, or heck, even something as slightly offbeat as Nancy Drew.
