♦ Rainbow Village – A Place of Wonder or a Place of Mysteries (Plural)?

In “Ms. Ma, Nemesis”, Ma Ji-won aka “Ms. Ma”, was once a respected mystery writer. But her life is shattered when she is accused of murdering her own daughter. After being imprisoned for a crime she insists she did not commit, Ms. Ma makes a daring escape. Her quest for justice leads her to Rainbow Village. It appears to be a peaceful community. How can a place with rainbow in the name be anything but peaceful? It turns out, this village becomes the backdrop for her quiet investigation and the stage for a series of interconnected mysteries.

Ms. Ma adopts a new persona and begins observing the residents with the sharp, analytical eye that made her a successful mystery writer. Her grief and determination fuel her ability to notice details others overlook. Soon people come to her for help with solving local cases. These cases reveal the darker undercurrents beneath the town’s picturesque surface. Each mystery she unravels brings her closer to understanding the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death. At the same time, she is exposing the secrets of those around her.

The “Niece” (??)

One of the first people Ms. Ma encounters is Seo Eun-Ji, a young woman who unexpectedly introduces herself as Ms. Ma’s niece. Seo Eun-Ji’s sudden appearance raises questions, but her presence becomes a complicated comfort as the two women navigate their shared living space. Seo Eun-Ji’s motives remain unclear, yet their relationship evolves and weaves threads of suspicion, loyalty, and vulnerability.

The Detective

Ms. Ma also crosses paths with Han Tae-Kyu, the detective who originally handled her case that resulted in her conviction. His presence represents both the justice system that failed and wronged her and the persistent threat of being captured again. Ms. Ma must avoid recapture, especially since she is unsure of the detective’s true motivation. If Han Tae-Kyu’s investigation was flawed and she is innocent, will he try to cover up his mistakes OR help her find the real murderer?

An Unexpected Ally

Ko Mal-Koo is a retired gangster turned loan creditor. Despite his rough exterior, Ko Mal-Koo becomes one of Ms. Ma’s unlikely allies. His street smarts and gruff humor provide balance to the drama’s darker themes, and his loyalty adds a sense of found family to Ms. Ma’s otherwise solitary mission.

The village’s residents are comprised of police officers, gossipy neighbors, and an enigmatic newcomer. Gradually, Ms. Ma becomes the “Miss Marple” of Rainbow Village as she solves case after case. A small circle of supporters forms around her who, intentionally or unintentionally, help Ms. Ma unravel the truth.

This Korean drama is a classic whodunit crime mystery.

Agatha Christie is known by many as the “Queen of Mystery”. She is was an English novelist best known for her detective novels and short-story collections featuring characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Her debut novel “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” (1920) introduced Hercule Poirot, the professional Belgian detective, and launched her writing career.

But fans also fell in love with Miss Marple, Christie’s shrewd amateur sleuth. Miss Marple proved that age ain’t nothing but a number and Hercule Poirot wasn’t the only one with “little gray cells”. The character Miss Jane Marple first appeared in “The Murder at the Vicarage” (1930). Marple is an elderly English spinster who solves crimes using keen observation, deep knowledge of psychology and human nature, and analogies to village life. Poirot and Miss Marple are Agatha Christie’s most iconic detectives.

I have watched and re-watched the Agatha Christie mystery series too many times to count. When I saw that the K-drama “Ms. Ma, Nemesis” was inspired by Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, how could I not add it to my watch list?

The plot for the novel titled “Nemesis” involves a wrongful accusation. A young man was wrongly imprisoned for the murder of a young woman he loved.

Five? I picked up on one novel. However, the review published by Peschel Press found five-plus (5+). How’s that for a variation of my game “Spot the Book”?
