More Cuphead Games Announced For The Future…And The Past

Fairly early in tonight’s Summer Games Fest presentation, a Cuphead reporter (he had a cup for a head, but I don’t think he was THAT Cuphead…) appeared on screen to announce the next project from Studio MDHR, who hasn’t been heard from since 2022 when the DLC “Delicious Last Course” was introduced. The puppet confirmed that work is now underway on a new Cuphead adventure…and that’s all he’d say about it.

Which is understandable. Both the first game and the DLC took a very long time to develop. Hand-drawing all those graphics one frame at at time isn’t a quick process. We don’t expect to hear about the sequel again for a few years yet. But surely they can release something else to pad the time, right?

Presenting “Mighty Cuphead Adventure” for the Sega Master System…and no, we’re not kidding. The game was built from the ground up to run on Sega’s first American console. Why the SMS and not the more common NES we don’t know…the SMS was slightly more advanced, so perhaps the NES couldn’t run all of their ideas. But it really will be sold on a cartridge for the Master System…and modern consoles too.

In true Studio MDHR fashion, this game goes beyond just taking inspiration from the classics of the 1980s… it is actually built with technology of the era! That’s right: Mighty Cuphead Adventure is programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed with the exacting specifications of the Sega Master System home gaming console in mind. While the game will absolutely be compatible with modern consoles and PC, players who want a true blast from the past will be able to experience it on a physical cartridge on the Sega Master System home gaming console.

No word on when we’ll see Mighty Cuphead Adventure, but the release date is probably well before we’ll see Cuphead 2.

The Cuphead train just keeps rolling, doesn't it? It's wild how they're expanding the universe with these new games. I'm all for more of that hand-drawn art style and tricky gameplay, even if it means my controller is going to take a beating.

I'm actually more excited about the idea of revisiting older styles with the new announcements. It's like they’re inviting us back into that charming, yet brutal world. I'm curious if they'll integrate any new mechanics or keep it classic. What do you think? Are you hoping for new gameplay elements, or is the pure Cuphead experience enough?
