Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back Announced

Looks like they were serious: the people who made Lollipop Chainsaw RePop, the remake of the 2012 fast-paced hack-and-slasher, are daring to attempt an actual sequel. They call it Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back and say they can get it out by 2027.

After an undisclosed period of time, Juliet Starling is still roller-skating around San Romero, still devoted to her family calling of zombie-slaying in gratuitously violent fashion, and still rocking her boyfriend’s living head on her hip. But it’s San Romero itself that’s changed: the whole city was bought and transformed into a movie set. Now trapped inside a twisted director’s feature, Juliet must do her thing to fight for freedom and liberate the city. Seems wacky enough, but….

What makes us wary about this is the fact that none of the original creators are involved. The first Lollipop Chainsaw was a Suda51 joint…you know Suda51; he’s the one responsible for the No More Heroes series and a bunch of other offbeat, crazy games. Suda is the kind of thing that can’t really be imitated or copied easily, and you can add to this the fact that Lollipop Chainsaw was his team-up effort with…James Gunn. Yes, the guy now in charge of the DC Cinematic Universe. Gunn is not coming back, unless he really really falls from grace. But Suda…he has not expressed any interest in directing a Lollipop Chainsaw 2, but I have to wonder, did they even ask him?

Lollipop Chainsaw 2 feels like a zombie of its own, a game that only exists because someone saw dollar signs in resurrecting the property. We can’t make that final judgment call because the thing’s not out there yet, but the gameplay video released by Dragami Games needs a lot of work. We see Juliet chainsawing packs of undead on the streets and again in the pink lair of a boss called “Zorbie” who is an obvious take on Barbie. Zorbie just sits there and occasionally throws things while generic zombie hordes generate themselves as chainsaw fodder. There’s no comparison between this limp scene and the outrageously over-the-top baddies Juliet fought the first time.

It feels cheap and lifeless, and the character and premise deserve better. Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back is set to launch on Playstation 5 sometime in 2027 (at least it could get a physical disc).

The over-the-top humor and absurdity of Lollipop Chainsaw always reminded me of the spirit of Shadows of the Damned, where the blend of dark themes with outrageous comedy created a unique experience. It's a shame that not every attempt at that formula lands as well, but both games had a certain charm in their chaos.

I am not expecting Suda51 and James Gunn to return, because that was always going to be difficult. But the new team needs to prove they understand why people still remember Lollipop Chainsaw. Right now, I am interested, but I am definitely not sold yet.

I agree that the gameplay footage is not doing the sequel any favors right now. Zorbie looks like a funny idea on paper, but a boss just sitting there while zombies spawn around her does not sound very exciting. The original had bosses with much stronger personalities and ridiculous designs.

The Zorbie fight especially looks like something that needs more work. A Barbie parody can be funny, but the boss still needs to feel like a boss. I want to see something that makes me think, "What the hell am I fighting?" in a good way.

I am curious about this mainly because Juliet is such a fun character. I do not think she needs to become darker or more serious for the sequel. Keep her cheerful while she is cutting through an absurd number of zombies.

I still remember playing the first game back in 2012, the humor and the music choices really made it special. Without Suda51 or James Gunn this just feels like a different product wearing the same skin. I am not saying it will be bad automatically but the creative vision that made the original weird and fun is missing from the start. That Zorbie boss fight looks really basic compared to what we got before, just standing there throwing stuff is not exciting to watch. I want to be wrong about this but companies usually bring back dead franchises for money, not because they have a real story to tell. I will wait for more gameplay before deciding but my hope is low right now.

Zorbie being a Barbie parody is kind of funny not going to lie, at least someone on the team has a sense of humor. I just hope the rest of the bosses get more creative than that because one joke will not carry a whole game.

People act like every sequel without original creators is automatically trash but that is not always true, sometimes new teams bring fresh energy. I am choosing to stay neutral until we see more footage, judging a whole game from one short clip feels rushed to me. Dragami Games might surprise us, or they might not, but giving them zero chance before release is not fair either. I get why long time fans are upset though, this series has a specific identity and losing the original team is a big loss no matter how you look at it.

The chainsaw combat animations in that clip looked stiff to me, like there was no weight behind each hit. In the first game every swing felt satisfying and loud, this new footage just does not have that same punch yet.
